First Look – CLYW BOY

December 16, 2019 By Steve Brown

CLYW has announced their first signature model for Ayumu Harada, the BOY. An update to the classic CLYW Arctic Circle family, the first release of the BOY comes in Copper Pot, Dark Green, Harrison Hurricane, Clareview Station and Red w/Silver Splash…all long-time favorite CLYW colorways. From their site:

We’re very excited to release the BOY, the first signature return top for Ayumu Harada. Designed to be the next evolution of Arctic Circle family, the BOY is the ultimate refinement of those ideals. Zach Gormley’s original vision was something wide, powerful, and floaty that could handle anything he could create…and Ayumu’s dream was to take it just a bit further.

Working with Ayumu, we looked at every single line, angle, and transition and made sometimes the tiniest adjustments to bring out the absolute maximum potential of this shape and profile. Weight adjustments were made to keep the ultra-light and floaty feel of the AC series while finding just a bit more power and stability to get through modern tricks. No detail was too small to consider, and we revisited every single aspect of the AC and AC2, questioned our own motivations, and make sure that every decision was deliberate and furthered the goal of bringing this idea to it’s full potential.

Sometimes you need to look back in order to move forward. This return top is an amazing midpoint between throwback and next steps, and we can’t wait bring you on this journey with us.

The BOY hits North American retailers Tuesday, December 17th at 9 pm EST, is available in Asia Wednesday, December 18th at 12 pm JST, and in Europe Wednesday, December 18th at 4 am CEST. Retail price is $85-$95.

So what better way to promote it than to smash Mark’s face onto Keiran and vice-versa and make everyone super uncomfortable?

First release of the Pariah was at the 2019 World YoYo Contest, but more will be available soon. Check out full specs below.

First Look: CLYW Wildfire

April 19, 2019 By Steve Brown

CLYW has officially announced the specs and release date for their new competition-oriented flagship model, the Wildfire! Available Thursday, April 25th at 10 PM EST, check out full specs, details, and photos below.

The CLYW Wildfire is the best pure competition return top we’ve ever made. That feels super weird to say, since we’ve never really considered ourselves a “competition” kinda company, but here we are. Life moves fast.

If you like speed combos, if you do all that wild horizontal stuff, if you need something ultra fast and light that can rip through all the tricks, well…we made you a thing.

We started with the body profile of the Bonfire, one of our all-time favorite return tops. We carved out a ton of body weight, tried our very best to optimize the rim weight while keeping that “Caribou feel”, and then sent our first prototypes to the 2018 World YoYo Contest in Shanghai. The first Wildfire protos helped Andrew Maider get all the way to 1A Finals from the wild card round, which we were awfully proud of. We collected feedback from our team and from lots of other players at the contest, and then we spent months tweaking and obsessing over the design until we landed on this final version.

Our team loves it. All the players we’ve handed it to seem to love it. We really hope that you love it too.

OFFICIAL RETAIL RELEASE DATE:

N. AMERICA – THURS, APRIL 25th / 10 PM EST
JAPAN – FRIDAY, APRIL 26th, 11 AM JST
EUROPE – FRIDAY, APRIL 26th, 4 AM CEST

CLYW Wildfire Specs:

Diameter: 56.4 mm
Width: 44.4 mm
Weight: 63.8 grams
Response: Snow Tires
Bearing: Center Trac™

One Drop Virtuoso; New Signature Model for Ethan Cheung

April 5, 2019 By Steve Brown

One Drop YoYos has announced the Virtuoso, a new signature model for Ethan Cheung!

Ethan is one of our very favorite players, and it’s super gratifying to see a new signature model for him. His creative talents are truly staggering, and watching his US Nationals freestyle to music he composed and performed was a high point of the event.

Ethan’s new signature model, the Virtuoso, is designed and produced by One Drop YoYos. Here’s what they have to say about it:

It’s always intriguing to make a signature yo-yo.  We always invite the player to contribute as much as possible to the design so that this important moment for them is the best it can be.  A good measure of success is if the yo-yo is a reflection of the person. Ethan Cheung is a player on our team who is focused on competitive yo-yoing, but he doesn’t sacrifice any artistry in this pursuit.  This rare combination makes Ethan stand out.

If you watch Ethan Cheung’s performance at Worlds 2018 in Shanghai you will notice precision, artistry, clarity, mastery.   If you look at his signature yo-yo, the Virtuoso, you will notice the same characteristics. The 7075 aluminum alloy design is very focused towards function as a hard core competitive yo-yo with all the performance you would expect.  If you look closely, you’ll also see the artistry with the clean flowing lines, the minimalist cup, the light bead blast, and the beautiful “projection profile” on the face of the rim giving a small nod to our first yo-yo, the Project.

Ethan explains his thought process on designing his signature yo-yo:

“At a glance, the design is reminiscent of the Format:C: which was the yoyo that allowed me to push my own boundaries and place 10th at Worlds in Iceland. But if you look more closely, you’ll notice the grooves on the rim – a tribute to the original Project and the roots of One Drop. For this signature model, I wanted a yoyo that would allow me to explore more styles of movement, that complements any style of play thrown at it. It is this balance of comfort and performance, of minimalism and detail, that makes us proud to present: the Virtuoso.”

The Virtuoso will be available this month at YoYoExpert.com.

One Drop YoYos Virtuoso Specs:

Weight: 64.7 grams
Width: 45.30 mm
Diameter: 56.60 mm
Response: One Drop Flow Groove
Bearing Size: Large (C) stainless steel (One Drop 10 Ball Bearing)

YoYo Spotlight – Duncan Orbit

January 16, 2019 By Steve Brown

Duncan Orbit Specs:

Diameter: 54.22 mm
Width: 44.35 mm
Weight: 64.8 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pad
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)
Retail Price: $44.99 USD

The Orbit is the signature yo-yo of 2-time Israeli Champion and 3-consecutive-time European Champion Tal Mordoch!

Winning so many titles requires a lot of change, and the Orbit is tailored to Tal’s precise, well-controlled and constructive combos. The multi-stepped design gives it a wide catch zone to ensure a smooth landing and that little extra security for riskier elements. The weight is perfected to feel floaty with a powerful spin, allowing you to triumph through your long combos and technical tricks with ease!

From the contest stage to #trickcircle, everyone is sure to feel your pull with the gravity of the Orbit!

PLAY

The Orbit is definitely optimized for Tal’s style of play…it’s fast and plays super zippy on the string, sliding around so quickly it barely feels like the string is touching the walls of the yoyo at all. The slightly smaller-than-average diameter of the yoyo makes it feel even faster, and allows for the just slightest bit of advantage when moving it through incredibly tight mounts and string segments. There is a ton of rim weight here, so even though the Orbit feels small in your hands, it packs a punch at the end of the string and gives you plenty of spin time to get through even your most complicated combos.

LOOKS

The Duncan Orbit keeps it simple and functional with solid color anodizing (and just one fade), but the inner cup is filled with artwork inspired by 1960s retro sci-fi illustrations. The fit and finish are great, and the engraving is a super-fun nod to yo-yo’s “golden era”. The profile of the yoyo is simple but thoughtful, and was clearly developed with specific input from Tal to really mesh well with his precise style of play.

VALUE

The Duncan Orbit retails for only $44.99, making it a super affordable contest throw or an easy splurge for the casual player. If quick, technical play and a slightly smaller yoyo sound like your jam, this is definitely a great value.

The Duncan Orbit is available now at YoYoExpert.com.

First Look – CLYW Akita

December 19, 2018 By Steve Brown

And just barely in time for Christmas delivery, CLYW finally drops the Akita…the long awaited signature model for Mark Mangarin.

The Akita clocks in at about the same width as the Manatee, but with a profile that is classic CLYW organic. Big fat rims for days! The addition of internal steel rim weights that account for 34% of the total weight of the yoyo (22 grams!) mean the Akita is wide, comfy, and has all the power you need to get through anything you can think of.

The Ferdico Fade edition (30 pieces) will be available direct tonight at CLYW.ca, and more colors are coming in January to YoYoExpert. Check out full description and specs from CLYW below!

The Akita is the first signature model for Mark Mangarin, and we knew it had to be amazing.

Mark is your favorite player’s favorite player. His trick construction is always unique and boundary breaking, and his work with the Scales Collective consistently pushes modern technical yoyoing forward in a way that is inspiring and difficult to keep up with. We knew that a signature return top for him had to be incredible, but with his unique style we had to bridge the gap between comfy Caribou-style and raw performance.

So, we did.

The Akita’s fat rims feel amazing in the hand, bringing back memories of the Chief and the Avalanche. They taper sharply enough that they increase the play area tremendously, giving you a full 40 mm of catch zone…perfect for those big body moves and tricky horizontal catches.

The bi-metal rings push a ton of weight to the far outer rim of the return top, and combined with the extreme width of the Akita they make nearly anything possible. Mark is constantly pushing the limits of trick construction, and now he has a return top that can handle anything he can think of.

Each Akita ships with a Fat Kitty String and a limited edition hard enamel pin.

CLYW Akita Specs:

Diameter: 55.10 mm
Width: 48.10 mm
Weight: 64.75 grams
Response: Snow Tires
Bearing: Center Trac™

First Look – CLYW Metal Yeti

December 18, 2018 By Steve Brown

CLYW is closing out the year with a bang with a limited release of the Metal Yeti, the latest model in the Yeti line. With just a few pieces released to a couple of retailers, this limited pre-release did pretty well considering no one knew it was coming! The full release is scheduled for mid-January, and it will be available worldwide.

Check out CLYW’s release info and full specs for the Metal Yeti below!

We are beyond thrilled to introduce the Metal Yeti.

The Yeti has been our most challenging project ever. Two plastic iterations came and went with varying degrees of success, rife with challenges, and both ended their lifespans early due to production problems that we just couldn’t quite solve. But the shape and the feel were just too. damn. good and we couldn’t give up on it, so we went back to what we do best…precision metal.

The Metal Yeti is a beautiful halfway point between nostalgia and the new new, with a play style that really makes us feel like it’s an instant classic. (Fun fact, the hub stickers are left over from the very first Yeti production run!) Something about this return top is just “perfect Caribou” and none of us can put our prototypes down. We’re so excited for everyone to try these that we even made a lot more than usual to get the price down so that we could make them even more affordable.

METAL YETI SPECS:

DIAMETER: 58.6 MM
WIDTH: 45 MM
WEIGHT: 67 GRAMS
BEARING: SIZE C CENTER TRAC™
RESPONSE: SNOW TIRES
SUGGESTED RETAIL: $65 USD

BOX INCLUDES:

ASSEMBLED RETURN TOP
FAT KITTY STRING
YETI STICKER SHEET
LIMITED EDITION HARD ENAMEL PIN

First Look: OhYesYo x One Drop – Eclipse

November 14, 2018 By Steve Brown

OhYesYo and One Drop have finally announced and released pics and specs for their collab, the Eclipse!

Check out the full story behind this yoyo and specs below. No word yet on release date but expect to see these hitting stores this month or very early December.

On the 21st of August 2017, the “Great American Eclipse” happened. It was a total solar eclipse. As the two heavenly bodies came into alignment, we found beauty in the darkness. Coffin Nachtmahr, Founder of OhYesYo, Frequency Wavelength Modulator, and Yo-yoing’s Modern Anti-Hero, tells the story of the Eclipse:

— The Set Up —

This project started as a camping trip to Marty Coatney’s farm in Lebanon, Oregon. He invited a bunch of yoyoers and others to the land to see the 2017 solar eclipse. Andy Kenst (a yo-yoer who lived in Oregon near One Drop) and myself had been building a friendship and he helped fund a project of mine earlier that year and was like “Coffin, you gotta come see this man.” Apprehensive as I usually am, I explained I’d try to make it. A week later Andy messaged me and said “Hey, I got you a plane ticket – see you soon lol.” From that point on it was all great – I’d never been to Oregon and I was beyond hype. Andy joked about collaborating with One Drop and I said if they’re interested I’d gladly draw something up on the spot.

— The Eclipse —

Fast forward a bit and I’m in Eugene, Oregon. Marty comes to pick me up from the airport and we head to his house. This is really my first interaction with Marty and we get along immediately. I met his family as well and got his son into skateboarding which for me felt amazing. Andy and I finally meet face to face and the party begins. Lots of fun and festivity at Marty’s place as people begin coming in to set up camp. I successfully broke and repaired his dad’s 4×4 which bridged a gap between me and his dad. There were lots of great folks at the farm.

— Beerlunch —

Andy says “hey dude, let’s make a trip to One Drop”, so I grab my backpack and we’re outta there. I arrive and finally get to meet the One Drop team and they are arguably some of the chillest people ever. I proceed to go observe the machines in their factory that I’d obsessed over in the background of several videos. Spotted Victoria (One Drop names all of their machines) and snapped a photo of it. Having some background in robotics I just wanted to observe them while they worked to learn as much as I possibly could. Deep States and Trilliums were going out this weekend so I offered my help if it was needed, but everyone wanted me to enjoy the trip more than anything. We left the shop and walked to get some beer and food nearby (might’ve been the greatest beer I’ve had) and then an ice cream shop where I had to be educated about what an Affogato was (ice cream with espresso poured over it) – so good. We came back and sat at Shawn’s desk and he says “you wanna make something?” I reach for my mini notebook and sketch up something that looks like it would be fun. I’ve always been biased to mid weight over direct center or rim weight. After about 20 minutes of very minor tweaks for aesthetics and what not, we had something that resembles a damn good yoyo.

Throughout the weekend I come back and forth to the One Drop factory to hang out and play with the massive collection of Yoyos available there.

— It’s Alive… It’s ALIVE —

Months later I receive a photo of the most gorgeous matte grey yo-yo that tells me it’s Everything I wanted it to be. A few days after that, the Eclipse protos arrive at my house and just in time I take them to the East Coast Masters yo-yo contest and it’s an instant hit – everyone was hooked on them. From that point on, people have been asking when or where they could get one. July comes up and I’m at Nationals with one Eclipse and it’s getting passed around profusely and it strikes me again everyone loves it. Markmont claims it was incredibly smooth for the way it looked. I’m very pleased with this knowledge.

–The Drop–

The plan now is for me to come back to Oregon to finish what we started. I cannot wait to assemble these and to share this wonderful opportunity with the people who have patiently waited for it. Collaboration is what this community is all about, and the story and the result of the Eclipse is ready to be shared. Nothing but love … and a little darkness.

OhYesYo x One Drop Eclipse Specs:

Diameter: 55.00 mm

Gap Width: 4.45 mm

Yoyofficer Blossom - Ryosuke Ito

We’ve got your first look at the new YoYofficer Blossom, the signature model for Ryosuke Ito and the first signature model from YoYofficer! Here’s their description:

The YoYofficer Blossom was designed with Ryosuke’s play style in mind, and was named by his wife and his daughter.

Lightweight yet long spinning, this yoyo has a great explosive power and also features a shallower gap than usual to make binds and regens easier even in slow spin situations, a necessity for 3a players.

A thinner string would also make this yoyo incredible for other styles of play like 1a.

We picked 4 beautiful, eye-catching colors for our first signature release.

We love this new model and hope you will too.

Sebastian Brock x One Drop – Overture

June 20, 2018 By Steve Brown

Sebastian Brock x One Drop YoYos Overture

Sebastian Brock has teamed up with One Drop YoYos to design and produce his ideal organic shaped yoyo, the Overture! Check out One Drop’s description and full specs below. No word yet on release date or price.

An Overture is an introduction and a start to something great.

We are deeply honored to begin working with U.S. National Champion Sebastian Brock to bring his dream yo-yo into the world:  The Overture.  Sebby is a legend and has been at the top of the yo-yo competitive scene for more than a decade.  He is also an innovative yo-yo artist with a unique style.  He brings years of experience and perspective so we were thrilled to have the opportunity to build his yo-yo.

We are  also excited to have Max Naff in the collaboration to bring us the artwork.

The approach to the collaboration was to build the yo-yo that Sebby has had in his mind and heart for a long time:  a refinement of the classic organic yo-yo.   Sebby’s yo-yoing is noted for plane-pushing and having many layers to the tricks, and as a result he was looking for big (58mm), stable, bead blasted yo-yo with a balanced distribution of weight that is tuned for his style.   It feels good to return to a large retro hub that allows for a little extra center weight, a beefy and reliable 16mm axle and lots of style.

Besides being a top competitor, Sebby is well known for creating the The Alternative Freestyle Invitational which generally takes place at the World Yo-Yo Contest.  He had the idea to showcase the art of yo-yoing without the pressure of the point system.   He did this for the love of yo-yoing and inspiring players are all kinds to showcase their talents and style and hopefully inspire future players.

Sebby hopes the Overture will inspire your play and he says that it “slays with a soul”.

Sebastian Brock x One Drop YoYos – Overture Specs:

Weight: 66.9 grams
Width: 45.0 mm
Diameter: 57.9 mm
Response: One Drop Flow Groove
Bearing Size: Large (C) stainless steel (One Drop 10 Ball Bearing)

YoYo Spotlight – Mythril Zeppelin

June 18, 2018 By Steve Brown

Mythril Zeppelin Yoyo

Mythril Zeppelin Specs:

Diameter: 56.99 mm
Width: 44.05 mm
Weight: 67.1 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pad
Bearing: Centering Bearing Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)
Retail Price: $65 USD

The Zeppelin is designed with luxury in mind. It plays and looks as stunning as any expensive high end model, but it was created with an economical approach in mind that won’t break your bank.

It was a long road to get to the final Zeppelin design – After a lot of prototypes and rejected versions it is finally complete and you can really feel all the hard work that went into it. Everything from the shape to the color to the design aesthetics on the Zeppelin looks immaculate and it has the performance to match!

PLAY

The Zeppelin is a solid, stable throw with a luxury feel and plenty of speed. It’s almost too easy to keep the Zeppelin on-plane during tricks, which is quite a feat considering that that profile is such a comfortable, rounded, semi-organic shape. Without pushing an extreme v-shape, Mythril has created a yoyo that can handle all the competition tricks you can throw at it while still feeling comfortable enough to be a daily knock-around throw. There are some yoyos that push you towards a certain style of play…the Mythril Zeppelin really works well as an all-around throw, and it’s a perfect addition to anyone’s collection.

LOOKS

The Mythril Zepplin keeps it simple and classy with no logo engraved on the yoyo itself, but a sharply domed hub and a single silver circle engraved around that hub. The result is almost startling simple, bordering on iconic, and it really lets you focus more on the actual shape of the yoyo. Free of distraction, the Mythril is a player’s yoyo, meant to a workhorse for your day in, day out play. The simple aesthetic (done really well) combined with quality machining and anodizing, makes this a stand out in the budget metal price range.

Mythril Zeppelin yoyo

VALUE

The Mythril Zeppelin retails for $65 and is a bargain at twice that price. It’s absolutely remarkable what Mythril YoYos has accomplished with this design at such an affordable price, and this is very quietly one of the absolute best deals out there. This yoyo is going to bring you good play time for years to come.

The Mythril Zeppelin is available now at YoYoExpert.com.
