Bryan Jardin – What’s Your Setup?

October 21, 2019 By Steve Brown

Today we catch up with Bryan Jardin – Marketing Specialist for Duncan Toys and 7-time Philippine National YoYo Champion!

What are you throwing?

Barracuda X and Yoshicuda X. They’re just so powerful! The spin-time is what I needed for both 1A and 5A. Barracuda X is for 1A: it’s light and I can easily control it. Yoshicuda X for 5A: As I grow old, I’m liking undersized yo-yos for 5A. Both share the same shape, but the dimension and weight are perfectly designed on each discipline.

What response are you using?

Default Red Duncan Pads. Not available for retail stores yet, but coming soon. It makes my yo-yo snappy…I kinda like old school feeling when I throw. I want my yo-yos to bind easily without thinking I have a knot, you know what I mean? I’m picky, I also change these depending on how many hours I play. But if it doesn’t bind the way I wanted to, I change both sides.

What bearing are you using?

Dif-E-Yo Konkave for more than a decade now. Everday carry, I don’t worry much about it. As long as it binds and the bearing is working, I’m all good. Contest season is a different story. If I’m serious about winning, I have a different formula. I break bearings because I throw so hard. I tried cleaning it in different ways for many years, then I got tired. So I change bearing if I feel like it doesn’t spin the way I wanted to. I don’t throw out the bad ones, I just switch them to my EDC.

What string are you using?

Kitty Fat – it’s fat, and tension is consistent. I also like the economical price string. I change strings frequently. When I’m practicing for a contest, I change strings every after 2 freestyle practice. Since I throw hard, I stretch the string so fast. I don’t throw them out, I just set them aside and then use them in my everyday carry yo-yos.

Mark Montgomery – What’s Your Setup?

October 18, 2019 By Steve Brown

Today we catch up with Mark Montgomery – trick innovator, graphic designer, philanthropist, and one of the most stylish trick creators in the history of yoyoing.

What are you throwing?

Clear Markmont. Classic. Favorite thing is the weight distribution and comfort of shape

What response are you using?

One Drop response pads – not overly grabby and smooth in play w/o any slipping.

What bearing are you using?

One Drop 10 ball factory lubed. Silent and smooth.

What string are you using?

Markmont. Formulas Draken – stiff, fast and tactile. I can really ‘feel’ what I’m doing because of the texture and weighted feel it has. When it’s hot and sticky outside I use MF Copernicus (Copi) – it’s very bounce, soft to the touch and great against humidity and hand sweat.

Simpson Wong – What’s Your Setup?

October 14, 2019 By Steve Brown

What’s Your Setup? is a new feature for YoYoNews where we ask your favorite players about what they’re throwing with. Today we catch up with Simpson Wong – co-owner of C3yoyodesign, fashion mogul, and one of the absolute nicest people in yoyoing.

What are you throwing?

My throw of the month is Berserker MAX. Because it is speedy and yet just heavy enough for doing tech-ish combo.

What response are you using?

I am using C3 JP response pad. It has a nice spin power in the beginning, a smooth feeling even mounting on multiple strings, and can still binds smoothly even when the spin starts to lose its momentum.

What bearing are you using?

Dif-e-Yo Konkave bearing, clean it with Zippo lighter fluid, and then add a touch of Revolution BB.
Also, I replaced aluminum axle with a titanium axle. This makes the centre a bit lighter, which in turns adds even more speed and power to Berserker MAX.

What string are you using?

Kitty String Fat Orange or Original Throw Fat Pink. Kitty String Fat Orange is the easiest to see on stage; Original Throw Fat Pink is a slack trick cheater!

Keiran Cooper – What’s Your Setup?

October 11, 2019 By Steve Brown

What’s Your Setup? is a new feature for YoYoNews where we ask your favorite players about what they’re throwing with. Today we catch up with Keiran Cooper – sponsored player for SF YoYos, design nerd, and all-around nice guy.

What are you throwing?

I’ve been using a modified version of the Cadence ES recently. I wanted to mess around with the functional benefits of laser engraving to see if we could create a different weight distribution without having to change the design itself. It worked, and the yo-yo plays great.

What response are you using?

I don’t really have a preference in response pads. In 2017, I bought a couple hundred of these pink pads with a gift certificate I won. They seem to do the job.

What bearing are you using?

I don’t really use any specific bearings. I have an assorted collection of concave, CT, and flat bearings that I rotate through. When a bearing of mine dies, I just throw in whatever bearing spins well enough. I also for whatever reason tend to not perform any maintenance on my bearings beyond using a little bit of YYJ thin lube here and there.

What string are you using?

I’m currently rotating between Zipline’s KC24 and PH22 blends. Both differ in terms of thread count but feel pretty similar in use. Each string lasts me up to three days of heavy use and a week of casual use.

Colin Beckford – What’s Your Setup?

October 7, 2019 By Steve Brown

What’s Your Setup? is a new feature for YoYoNews where we ask your favorite players about what they’re throwing with. Today we catch up with Colin Beckford…sponsored player for UNPRLD, yoyo judge, SCALES COLLECTIVE member, and all-around nice guy.

What are you throwing?

Currently throwing the ReCognition by UNPRLD. Just got some new colors for the 2nd run of it and I’ve been really digging them, but besides that my favorite thing about it is the momentum of the yo-yo in play. It’s pretty much perfect for me from a control perspective with my tricks as it doesn’t move super fast to the point where it feels flimsy as well as does not feel too hefty when I try to push it.

What response are you using?

I’ve been using Sochi Pink Pads for response. They’re very soft and nice.

What bearing are you using?

I use the Sochi Centering bearings, I’ve always been a fan of that shape style because it just feels ‘right’.

What string are you using?

I’ve been using Sochi Fat as of late. I’m about to compete again for the first time in nearly 8 months so I took some time to really figure out my ideal setup, and string is definitely the most important to me besides the yo-yo. Fat has been working well with me as of late from a tension & feeling standpoint. I also use a prototype of some new Sochi string made for Tyler Vienneau that is super fun and whippy, you’ll hear more about that soon.

CLYW x iYoYo Pixel Bearings

June 19, 2016 By Steve Brown

CLYW x iYoYo Pixel Bearings

CLYW and iYoYo have announced a new collaboration…but it’s a bearing, not a yoyo! Pixel Bearings are a collaborative release between the two companies that, unlike most collaborations, looks to be an ongoing project rather than a one-time release. Here are details from the CLYW website:

We’re excited to announce a new collaboration with iYoYo…Pixel Bearings!

We’ve always wanted our own special bearing. It’s one of those things…we always thought it would be neat to design a bearing that worked *a little bit better* in our return tops. Our friend Dave Geigle at iYoYo had an idea, and with some back-and-forth collaboration between him and Chris, Pixel Bearings were born!

Each Pixel Bearing features a series of eight steps, starting at the side walls and staggering down to the center of the bearing. This allows the string segments to micro-adjust and move past each other easily during complicated tricks. Eight steps…8-bit graphics…you see where we’re going with this. 😉

Pixel Bearings come lightly lubed from the factory. If you want your performance boost now, we recommend that you go ahead and clean the bearing before play. But if you’re patient, and willing to wait a bit longer, give it a single drop of your bearing cleaner of choice and then play it semi-responsive for a while and let the lube naturally break down over time. Could take days, could take weeks, but the end result will be a naturally broken-in bearing that plays crazy smooth with killer spin times.

Available soon at your favorite CLYW retailers!

We’ve got three of these Pixel Bearings to give away…just comment below and tell us why you want one, and we’ll pick three random answers to win a free Pixel Bearing. Winners will be selected Wednesday, June 22nd at noon EST.

Congratulations to Dylan Lear, JB, and Zach Smith on each winning a Pixel Bearing! Please check your email, and respond with your mailing address. Thanks, everyone!
