YoYo Spotlight – YoYoJam Diamondback II

September 23, 2015 By YoYoNews

YoYoJam Diamondback II

YoYoJam Diamondback II Specs:

Diameter: 55.96 mm
Width: 42.75 mm
Weight: 68 grams
Response: YoYoJam Silicone O-Ring (19mm pad)
Bearing: YoYoJam Speed Bearing Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)

The YoYoJam Diamondback II is a revised version of the Diamondback, re-imagined to meet the more demanding needs of today’s players. While the original Diamondback was an excellent competition yoyo, the Diamondback II revisits the weight distribution to put even more power in the player’s hands.

PLAY

The Diamondback II has a truly distinctive feel in the hand and on the string. The body thickness and profile give this yoyo an amazing ringing sound during play that we’ve never heard from any other yoyo. The result is an absolutely unique playing experience, something that YoYoJam has delivered time and time again over the history of their company. Redesigned by YoYoJam to be the signature model for team member Tylor McCallumore, the weight distribution on the Diamondback II gives the player an incredible amount of spin and stability, making this a top choice for long, involved combos that push your equipment to its limits.

Diamondback2

LOOKS

Available only in black or light blue, the Diamondback two is a visually simplistic yoyo. The heavy decoration of the first model is gone, with the Diamondback II only showing off a simple “TM” logo on the hub for Tylor McCallumore, and some text on a flat wall inside the cup. The contrast of the wide nickel-bronze weight ring against the black anodized body looks fantastic, and the light blue version will be perfect for stage work.

VALUE

The YoYoJam Diamondback II retails for $136, which is average for a high-quality bi-metal yoyo. Not a casual purchase, but if you’re a YoYoJam fan looking for your next contest killer, or just an aspiring contest player looking for something different to get the job done, the Diamondback II is a great choice.

YoYo Spotlight – Rebellion Butcher

August 5, 2015 By YoYoNews

YoYoRecreation Rebellion Butcher

Rebellion Butcher Specs:

Diameter: 55.03 mm
Width: 42.98 mm
Gap: 4.50 mm
Weight: 68 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pads
Bearing: Konkave Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)

The Butcher is part of the first wave of releases from Rebellion, a budget line of yoyos created by Kengo Kido and Piotrek Smietana of YoYoRecreation.

PLAY

The Butcher is a budget-friendly aluminum yoyo, based slightly on the design of the YoYoRecreation Mr. Butcher. Featuring a slimmer profile than the rest of the Rebellion line, the Butcher is ideal for ultra-complicated 1A play that requires fast movement through a lot of string segments, or 3A play which is always helped by a slightly narrower yoyo. Fast, stable, and long spinning, the Butcher is also dead smooth, to the point that it’s hard to admit it’s a “budget” model. Considered among plays to be one of the best all-around players of the Rebellion line so far, the Butcher can handle all your tricks and more.

LOOKS

The fit and finish on all of the Rebellion models are excellent for a line of budget yoyos. Available in solid colors only, the Rebellion line is meant to be a solid value with a simple aesthetic. Packed in a stamped cardboard box, the Rebellion line features only a simple engraving with its name and the brand’s flag icon.. Simple and straightforward, this model is meant for players.

VALUE

The Rebellion Butcher retails for just $56, making it an amazing value for the serious player on a budget. With high quality manufacturing and great play value, the Butcher is unbelievably good and meets or exceeds the value of most other yoyos in this price range. The Butcher looks, plays, and holds up like a far more expensive yoyo, and should serve you well.

YoYo Spotlight – Amplified Shout

July 28, 2015 By YoYoNews

Amplified Shout yoyo

Amplified Shout Specs:

Diameter: 57 mm
Width: 43.5 mm
Gap: 4.30 mm
Weight: 66.95 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pads
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)

The Shout is the first release from Amplified Return Tops, a new US-based yoyo brand created by LaMonte Patterson.

PLAY

The Shout has a big, angular feel that makes it feel like a much larger yoyo while still retaining the speed of something more compact. It plays reasonably fast, and the weight distribution gives it plenty of stability for all modern 1A and 5A play. If you like your yoyos with an especially wide “V” profile, the Shout really delivers. The Shout spins smooth and gives you great spin times, even with plane-breaking tricks, and is a promising freshman release from this new company. The Shout is definitely a stable, fun, throw for everyday practice or your next competition freestyle.

Shout_2

LOOKS

The fit and finish on the Amplified Shout are quite good. The color schemes are bright and fun, and well-done by a clearly reputable anodizing house. The machining is high quality, without distracting machine marks or flat spots.

VALUE

The Amplified Shout retails for $100 – $110, depending on colorway. The price is reasonable for a small-run production piece from a new company, and the quality lives up to the price tag. The Amplified Shout is not a casual purchase, but it’s a solid one.

The Acro is part of the first wave of releases from Rebellion, a new budget line of yoyos created by Kengo Kido and Piotrek Smietana of YoYoRecreation.

PLAY

The Acro is a budget-friendly aluminum yoyo, based slightly on the design of the YoYoRecreation Acrophobia. When you think of a budget model, “dead smooth” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind but the Rebellion Acro brings a smoothness that will leave you wondering just how they are able to sell this for such a low price. The full-sized body and wide profile make it easy to hit anything you’re trying on this yoyo, and it throws smooth and binds tight. It has a solid, quality feel and plays like a yoyo twice its price, and the inclusion of a Konkave bearing will make plenty of players happy. Fast on the string and long-spinning, the Acro is sure to become a contest favorite for players looking to get the most for their money. YoYo Spotlight – King Yo Star Rapid Light

May 20, 2015 By YoYoNews

King Yo Star Rapid Light yoyo

King Yo Star Rapid Light Specs:

Diameter: 54.70 mm
Width: 44.50 mm
Gap: 4.55 mm
Weight: 66.2 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pads
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)

The Rapid Light is the latest yoyo release from Canada-based King Yo Star.  The Rapid Light is a re-shaped, all-aluminum version of their recent bi-metal release, the Rapid.

PLAY

The Rapid Light is an aluminum yoyo, designed as a more budget-friendly version of the bi-metal Rapid. It’s fast and plays light on the string, and has quickly become a favorite of the King Yo Star team. It’s a great all-around player, handling 1A, 3A, and 5A equally well, and it’s a great choice for a budget 5A competition yoyo. The flat rims give this yoyo a nice, wide feel that helps with 5A catches. If you’re a fan of organic shapes but love the feel of flat rims, the King Yo Star Rapid Light is a great choice! The added step in the yoyo’s gap gives this model a really light response, making it a great choice for extra complicated tech that requires a lot of string layers in the gap.

King Yo Star Rapid Light yoyo

LOOKS

The fit and finish on the King Yo Star Rapid light are excellent for a budget yoyo. Available in solid colors or two-tone splashes, the Rapid Light has quality anodizing and comes in a variety of colorways that offer something for all tastes. The inner hub is identical to the original Rapid, give both models a cohesive “family” look. Whether on a shelf or on the string, the Rapid Light is a good looking yoyo.

VALUE

The King Yo Star Rapid Light retails for only $55, which seems to be the sweet spot for budget metal releases these days. The Rapid Light is a great performer in this price range!

YoYo Spotlight – YoYo Studio Llama Trick Motion

May 14, 2015 By YoYoNews

YoYo Studio Llama Rurikon

YoYo Studio Llama Trick Motion Specs:

Diameter: 51.92 mm
Width: 45.23 mm
Gap: 4.5 mm
Weight: 66.6 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pads
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)

The Trick Motion is a bi-metal yoyo from Japanese boutique manufacturer YoYo Studio Llama. Undersize and designed for tech and speed, theTrick Motion stands out in a crowded market.

PLAY

TheTrick Motion is a bi-metal yoyo, featuring an aluminum body with brass rings. The result is a yoyo with a really solid feel in the hand and spin times that never seem to end. Designed with small, tech play in mind (the listing on their site actually recommends chopsticks and protrusion-type tricks specifically), the Trick Motion excels at this kind of play! It’s incredibly fast on the string with spin time to spare, and the YoYoRecreation DS bearing that it ships with really adds to the feeling that this yoyo is twice as fast as you are. If you’re looking for something that can handle your toughest contest routine, and you like a yoyo that is a bit undersized, the Trick Motion will serve you well.

YoYo Studio Llama Rurikon

LOOKS

The Trick Motion holds to its Japanese roots with a subtle aesthetic that is a welcome change of pace. Anodized in several dark, very traditional-looking Japanese colors (as well as available raw and in a really eye-catching light blue), the Trick Motion has a classic and understated look. The brass rings have been coated with a special “black oxide film”, which gives the brass a sort of antique finish, while also protecting it from the oils on your hand. Well-worn brass tends to pick up a funky smell, and this special coating helps prevent this from happening. The Trick Motion comes in a simple wooden box with the YoYo Studio Llama logo laser engraved in the corner of the lid.

VALUE

The Trick Motion retails for ¥23,800 (about $199 USD), kicking it up in to the premium range for sure. Manufacturing in Japan is expensive, and a bi-metal with brass rings is fairly uncommon. The fit and finish are definitely worth it, and if you are seeking an undersized bi-metal the Trick Motion will serve you well for years to come. It’s not a casual purchase, but this yoyo is definitely worth the price if the specs are what you’re looking for. The Trick Motion is also a very limited production item…collectors, take note!

BUY THE YOYO STUDIO LLAMA RURIKON

The Trick Motion is available only direct from YoYo Studio Llama.
