January 8, 2020 By Steve Brown

Javier August and Sebastian Lavin bring the heat in their first video of the year for sponsor Duncan Toys. Solid dudes, solid tricks. From Duncan:

New Year. New Video.

A cinematic approach with a trick focused video. We present to you, Javier Augusto x Sebastian Lavin! These two are a great tandem. Javier is a Team Duncan veteran with a National Champion title under his belt, and Sebastian, who just started playing yo-yo three years ago and a rising Mexican star with a very competitive mindset. What else can we ask for? In a serious note, Javier is working hard to train Sebastian as he sees a bright future ahead of him. He’s been coaching Sebastian for two years now, and he’s not going to stop to help him become a top tier competitive player.

Bryan Jardin – What’s Your Setup?

October 21, 2019 By Steve Brown

Today we catch up with Bryan Jardin – Marketing Specialist for Duncan Toys and 7-time Philippine National YoYo Champion!

What are you throwing?

Barracuda X and Yoshicuda X. They’re just so powerful! The spin-time is what I needed for both 1A and 5A. Barracuda X is for 1A: it’s light and I can easily control it. Yoshicuda X for 5A: As I grow old, I’m liking undersized yo-yos for 5A. Both share the same shape, but the dimension and weight are perfectly designed on each discipline.

What response are you using?

Default Red Duncan Pads. Not available for retail stores yet, but coming soon. It makes my yo-yo snappy…I kinda like old school feeling when I throw. I want my yo-yos to bind easily without thinking I have a knot, you know what I mean? I’m picky, I also change these depending on how many hours I play. But if it doesn’t bind the way I wanted to, I change both sides.

What bearing are you using?

Dif-E-Yo Konkave for more than a decade now. Everday carry, I don’t worry much about it. As long as it binds and the bearing is working, I’m all good. Contest season is a different story. If I’m serious about winning, I have a different formula. I break bearings because I throw so hard. I tried cleaning it in different ways for many years, then I got tired. So I change bearing if I feel like it doesn’t spin the way I wanted to. I don’t throw out the bad ones, I just switch them to my EDC.

What string are you using?

Kitty Fat – it’s fat, and tension is consistent. I also like the economical price string. I change strings frequently. When I’m practicing for a contest, I change strings every after 2 freestyle practice. Since I throw hard, I stretch the string so fast. I don’t throw them out, I just set them aside and then use them in my everyday carry yo-yos.

Duncan Toys Presents: Janos Karancz – Grasshopper GTX

March 19, 2019 By Steve Brown

World YoYo Champion Janos Karancz reminds us all that he’s a legit wizard with this new video. Featuring his newest signature model from Duncan Toys, the Grasshopper GTX, which will be available this month at YoYoExpert.com.

Check out what Duncan has to say about the Grasshopper GTX:

We didn’t plan on revising the Grasshopper… Until János needed a new one. But why alter an already outstanding product?

World Champion János Karancz has been playing yo-yo for a long time, and throughout the years his tricks have changed with the current yo-yo meta, becoming longer, more fluid, and increasingly more complex. New types of tricks require a new type of yo-yo, and what that meant here was that his yo-yo needed an update.

Introducing the Grasshopper GTX: same look, new stainless steel placement! The new design features a stainless steel rim that’s pretty heavy compared to the aluminium body, making this yo-yo very strong and reliable, but it features the same look because it’s a simple, straightforward competition design with no gimmicks about it.

Let’s talk about the playability. As we were developing the Grasshopper GTX, János made it clear that he wanted more stability to help him perform his signature slack and rejection combos and glide through his rail and hop combos with ease.It took us multiple revisions and intensive design work to deliver this to the table. His last request? He wanted this yo-yo to be the king of horizontal tricks, and we were happy to oblige.

Brandon Vu, a yo-yo YouTuber, called the original Grasshopper X the Lamborghini of yo-yo. If the original was a Lambo, what would that make the new Grasshopper GTX?

Our team has already won a few titles using the new Grasshopper GTX: János placed 1st in 1A last year 44Clash using the GTX, competing against almost every world champion from the past ten years, so the new Grasshopper is no joke.

YoYo Spotlight – Duncan Roadrunner

January 21, 2019 By Steve Brown

Duncan Roadrunner Specs:

Diameter: 52.97 mm
Width: 44.92 mm
Weight: 64.8 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pad
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)
Retail Price: $35 USD

Check out the Roadrunner, the most recent addition to the Duncan Runner series!

The stylish grooved profile and wide stance give this yo-yo a completely unique feel and powerful spin. For this yo-yo, Duncan focused on creating a nimble, mobile, and all-around fun play experience. The wide shape helps you land all your risky and technical tricks, along with enabling ease of horizontal tricks. And as a cherry on top, the stylish groove finish gives you some impressive grind capabilities!

The Roadrunner is impeccably versatile, with a unique design enabling speedy and stylish tricks. So come along for a wild ride with your next favorite throw, the Roadrunner!

PLAY

The Roadrunner is a fast, fun little yoyo designed to be a great all-around player. It’s a great budget starter for 1A players, 3A players looking for an inexpensive pair to start beating up, or 5A players who are looking for something fun and stable that they are going to totally destroy while learning 5A.

The grooved gap makes grinds fun, and gives you a little less surface area so you can squeak out a few more seconds before you need to get it back on the string. The wide profile and large catch zone makes learning horizontal tricks easier, and the smaller diameter gives the Roadrunner a fun “toy” feel that makes the overall play experience even better.

With plenty of rim weight and stability, the Roadrunner is definitely great for more advanced players as well, but the pricing really makes it an amazing option for beginning players.

LOOKS

The Duncan Roadrunner sticks with simple solid colors, but is available in one splash variant for people who want a little more visual kick. The engraving is small and stays inside the inner hub, and the gap grooves add a nice bit of visual flair.

VALUE

The Duncan Roadrunner retails for only $35, making it one of the most affordable performance metal yoyos on the market. If you’re buying a first unresponsive yoyo for a friend, or looking for a great beater to work on a new style, the Roadrunner is a fantastic option.

YoYo Spotlight – Duncan Orbit

January 16, 2019 By Steve Brown

Duncan Orbit Specs:

Diameter: 54.22 mm
Width: 44.35 mm
Weight: 64.8 grams
Response: 19mm Slim Pad
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)
Retail Price: $44.99 USD

The Orbit is the signature yo-yo of 2-time Israeli Champion and 3-consecutive-time European Champion Tal Mordoch!

Winning so many titles requires a lot of change, and the Orbit is tailored to Tal’s precise, well-controlled and constructive combos. The multi-stepped design gives it a wide catch zone to ensure a smooth landing and that little extra security for riskier elements. The weight is perfected to feel floaty with a powerful spin, allowing you to triumph through your long combos and technical tricks with ease!

From the contest stage to #trickcircle, everyone is sure to feel your pull with the gravity of the Orbit!

PLAY

The Orbit is definitely optimized for Tal’s style of play…it’s fast and plays super zippy on the string, sliding around so quickly it barely feels like the string is touching the walls of the yoyo at all. The slightly smaller-than-average diameter of the yoyo makes it feel even faster, and allows for the just slightest bit of advantage when moving it through incredibly tight mounts and string segments. There is a ton of rim weight here, so even though the Orbit feels small in your hands, it packs a punch at the end of the string and gives you plenty of spin time to get through even your most complicated combos.

LOOKS

The Duncan Orbit keeps it simple and functional with solid color anodizing (and just one fade), but the inner cup is filled with artwork inspired by 1960s retro sci-fi illustrations. The fit and finish are great, and the engraving is a super-fun nod to yo-yo’s “golden era”. The profile of the yoyo is simple but thoughtful, and was clearly developed with specific input from Tal to really mesh well with his precise style of play.

VALUE

The Duncan Orbit retails for only $44.99, making it a super affordable contest throw or an easy splurge for the casual player. If quick, technical play and a slightly smaller yoyo sound like your jam, this is definitely a great value.

Kickstarter – YoYo Legacy Project

June 19, 2018 By Steve Brown

ARVE Error: Invalid URL https://youtu.be/vKQ87YP1UXw in url

To celebrate the 90 year anniversary of the modern yo-yo, our friends at theYoYo Legacy Project are offering a gorgeous set of exotic wood yo-yos that represent the historical milestones of our favorite toy. No dyes, stains, or tints are used; you’re seeing the natural color of sustainable, exotic woods from all over the world. While designed to be a beautiful desktop display piece, all yo-yos are fully functional. The Kickstarter will be running until July 9th, 2018.

In 1928 Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant, worked as a bellboy in a downtown Santa Barbara hotel. In his spare time, he hand-carved a small disc toy he called the Yo-Yo. On his breaks he would go out to the sidewalk and show passersby his toy and the unique tricks that could be learned. It captivated those who saw it! Americans loved the simple toy and Pedro Flores did not remain a bellboy for long.

On June 9th, 1928, Flores set up the first American Yo-Yo manufacturing operation in the Granada Building in downtown, Santa Barbara, California. Within two years he was producing 300,000 Yo-Yos a day at a cost of 15 cents to $1.50 each and promoting the first ever Yo-Yo contests throughout the area.

This project is a celebration of Pedro Flores and the 90th Anniversary of the Yo-Yo in America. It is also a tribute to my childhood love of the Yo-Yo and my lifelong passion for beautiful wood. How better to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of this wonderful toy than to create functional, desktop art with five historically significant Yo-Yos turned out of exquisite, exotic woods.

Backers have the option of quite a few cool rewards, including a reprint of the 1928 Flores trick booklet, a full set of the yoyos with a desk stand, and even a trip to their workshop to learn how to make wooden yoyos yourself!

Check out the full Legacy YoYo Project on Kickstarter and pledge your support today…the Kickstarter campaign ends July 9th!

And be sure to follow the YoYo Legacy Project on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for updates.
