The Acro is part of the first wave of releases from Rebellion, a new budget line of yoyos created by Kengo Kido and Piotrek Smietana of YoYoRecreation.

PLAY

The Acro is a budget-friendly aluminum yoyo, based slightly on the design of the YoYoRecreation Acrophobia. When you think of a budget model, “dead smooth” isn’t the first thing that comes to mind but the Rebellion Acro brings a smoothness that will leave you wondering just how they are able to sell this for such a low price. The full-sized body and wide profile make it easy to hit anything you’re trying on this yoyo, and it throws smooth and binds tight. It has a solid, quality feel and plays like a yoyo twice its price, and the inclusion of a Konkave bearing will make plenty of players happy. Fast on the string and long-spinning, the Acro is sure to become a contest favorite for players looking to get the most for their money. Excellent for 1A or 5A, although it may be too wide for most 3A players tastes.

LOOKS

The Rapid Light is an aluminum yoyo, designed as a more budget-friendly version of the bi-metal Rapid. It’s fast and plays light on the string, and has quickly become a favorite of the King Yo Star team. It’s a great all-around player, handling 1A, 3A, and 5A equally well, and it’s a great choice for a budget 5A competition yoyo. The flat rims give this yoyo a nice, wide feel that helps with 5A catches. If you’re a fan of organic shapes but love the feel of flat rims, the King Yo Star Rapid Light is a great choice! The added step in the yoyo’s gap gives this model a really light response, making it a great choice for extra complicated tech that requires a lot of string layers in the gap.

LOOKS

The fit and finish on the King Yo Star Rapid light are excellent for a budget yoyo. TheTrick Motion is a bi-metal yoyo, featuring an aluminum body with brass rings. The result is a yoyo with a really solid feel in the hand and spin times that never seem to end. Designed with small, tech play in mind (the listing on their site actually recommends chopsticks and protrusion-type tricks specifically), the Trick Motion excels at this kind of play! LOOKS

The Trick Motion holds to its Japanese roots with a subtle aesthetic that is a welcome change of pace. Anodized in several dark, very traditional-looking Japanese colors (as well as available raw and in a really eye-catching light blue), the Trick Motion has a classic and understated look. The brass rings have been coated with a special “black oxide film”, which gives the brass a sort of antique finish, while also protecting it from the oils on your hand. Well-worn brass tends to pick up a funky smell, and this special coating helps prevent this from happening. The Trick Motion comes in a simple wooden box with the YoYo Studio Llama logo laser engraved in the corner of the lid.

VALUE

The Trick Motion retails for ¥23,800 (about $199 USD), kicking it up in to the premium range for sure. Manufacturing in Japan is expensive, and a bi-metal with brass rings is fairly uncommon. The fit and finish are definitely worth it, and if you are seeking an undersized bi-metal the Trick Motion will serve you well for years to come. It’s not a casual purchase, but this yoyo is definitely worth the price if the specs are what you’re looking for. The Trick Motion is also a very limited production item…collectors, take note!

The Set Sail is a big yoyo. It’s above the normal “full size” range and veering into “over sized” but still plays like a smaller and lighter model. The extra diameter gives it some nice stability, and the blasted finish makes grinds so easy it feels like you’re cheating. Monkeyfinger is one of the few companies still offering yoyos stock with flowable silicone response, which gives the player the ability to really fine-tune the level of response for the Gelada 2…a nice feature for players who like to tinker with their equipment.

You’ll remember that HSpin, one of the earliest manufacturers to produce high-end, limited edition metal yoyos, closed their operations in December 2012. After selling off some leftover inventory, HSpin founder Chris Kayatz continued on with his new career and family, and seems to be doing quite well…although apparently the lure of just one. last. release. was too much for him, so we get this odd little gem based on the Good & Evil, one of HSpin’s most iconic releases.

PLAY

The HSpin x Zeekio Little Evil is the very definition of a pocket yoyo! So small it can easily fit in the 5th pocket of your jeans, but with the play value of a much larger yoyo, the Little Evil is an amazing novelty yoyo that packs a punch. Ultra-small yoyos rarely have the performance power to be a true “everyday carry”, but the Little Evil can handle pretty much any modern tricks you can throw at it…with the added bonus that hitting your hardest tricks on something this small makes you feel extra accomplished. The Little Evil packs full-size play into an ultra-small steel body, and will easily become a second everyday throw.

LOOKS

Full-sized stainless steel yoyos are impossible, since the metal is so much heavier than aluminum. But what would make for an unplayable yoyo in a full-sized model works perfectly when you scale the yoyo down! The added bonus is that a raw steel yoyo really does look fantastic…there’s an industrial feel that is totally unique to raw steel and the result is a yoyo that stands apart from the pack in both size and looks. Each Benchmark model has the same diameter, width, weight, response, bearing and gap, allowing players to strip away the variables and truly decide what shape yoyo works the best for their style. Poring through hundreds of models and trying to figure out what you like or don’t like can take forever…by setting a baseline for the specs and allowing the shapes to speak for themselves, players can more easily narrow their taste and spend time worrying about their tricks, and not their equipment.

PLAY

All three Benchmark Series models play smooth and true, with the quality that One Drop is known for producing. The lack of variance in specs means you can really experience what each shape offers as a benefit to your own style of play.

All three models feature One Drops Flow Groove Pads for response…one of the longest lasting response systems on the market. Perfect for a serious player on a budget, once these pads wear in they hold their sweet spot longer than any other response pad on the market and give you smooth play and snappy binds.

LOOKS

The Benchmark Series is an affordable line, and that means keeping the yoyo’s looks simple. While One Drop does offer the Benchmark series in special editions, the bulk of the Benchmark models ship in solid colors with no engraving…keeping the cost down for serious players, and keeping the yoyos from being so precious and collectible that you’re scared to scratch them up in pursuit of the perfect trick. This low pricing for a metal yoyo made in the US is unheard of, making the Benchmark Series an incredible deal for any player looking to stock up on their favorite model for competing. From new company Whimsy, the Poker Face is a well-made and incredibly smooth player from this first-time yoyo manufacturer. Heavily rim-weighted for long spins and tremendous stability, the Poker Face spins absolutely dead smooth – so smooth that it’s easy to underestimate how much spin you have left. The Poker Face has an almost organic body shape, but hold spin through regular and horizontal tricks like a more modern shape.

LOOKS

The Poker Face is one of the absolute best looking releases of 2014, featuring some of the best branding and packaging we’ve ever seen.The yoyo features a semi-flexible plastic sidecap that is securely mounted inside the halves, with custom art design to look like a playing card character doing a yoyo trick. The packaging mimics the look of the box of a deck of playing cards and the entire presentation is fantastic, especially for the first release of a new company. The anodization is dark and subtle, with a black and red acid wash (Hearts) or black and blue acid wash (Spades) that looks great up close.
