Luis Enrique and Paul Kerbel dominate Winter Contest (and Mexico!)

December 13, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

Mexico is no doubt quickly becoming a hot country in the yo-yo scene, and clearly ahead of the pack are YoyoFactory’s duo Luis Enrique and Paul Kerbel, who took first and second place at Mexico’s Winter contest, held last month.

While Paul has been competing internationally for a couple of years, Luis Enrique hit fast and hard this year, taking not only the Winter contest, but also the Summer contest in July and an impressive 5th place at this year’s World Yo-yo Contest. Paul comes from a win at this year’s Mexican national contest, the Triple Crown of Yoyo‘s East Coast Classic title, and a very respectable 7th place at the World Yo-yo Contest.

As demonstrated by Singapore’s recent success, the key to developing highly successful players may be a strong local competition scene, and that’s exactly what we see in Mexico right now. We look forward to seeing more of those guys!

2012 Japan Yo-yo League Kicks Off: Takeshi Matsuura Wins 1A at East Japan A

December 8, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

The 2012 Japan Yo-yo League officially started last weekend with the East Japan A Block Contest in Tokyo!

EJ has traditionally been a very strong regional contest, with the main Japanese competitors taking part. This year the contest was divided into two blocks, A and B. Block B will be held in Ichikawa City, in February.

In the A Block, Yoyojam’s prodigy and 5A World Champion Takeshi Matsuura surprised onlookers by winning the 1A division, ahead of YoyoRecreation’s Takahiro Iizuka, in 3rd, and Kento Noda, in 2nd. Is Takeshi Matsuura, who has won Japan Nationals in both 3A and 5A before, now aiming for the 1A title as well? Also worth noting is that 1A was the only division Takeshi competed in at EJ-A.

The winners in the other divisions were veteran Shuhei Kanai in 2A, Ken Takabayashi in 3A, Youhei Kagawa in 4A and Sora Ishikawa in 5A. Ishikawa was also the winner of the 44CLASH KIKSTYO Battle Tournament last month, and should be a contender for the Japanese title. 5A runner-up was Duncan Crew’s Shingo “Terry” Terada, who is still competing after more than 10 years in the scene!

The league continues next year with more regional contests throughout the country and finally the national contest:

  • December 4th, 2011 – East Japan A Block Contest (EJ-A), Tokyo
  • January 28th, 2012 – Central Japan Contest (CJ), Iwakura City
  • February 4th, 2012 – East Japan B Block Contest (EJ-B), Ichiwaka City
  • February 25th, 2012 – North Japan Contest (NJ), Sapporo
  • March 11th, 2012 – South Japan Contest (SJ), Kasuya District
  • April 21st, 2012 – West Japan Contest (WJ), Osaka
  • June 30th, 2012 – Japan National Yo-yo Contest, Ichikawa City
For all those interested in checking the action, proceed to Mr. Yamaguchi’s new YouTube channel. Music is replaced in most freestyles due to copyright issues, but it’s nonetheless great to have such a great resource back online!

Victor Gravitsky wins Russian Yo-yo Contest!

December 5, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

Team YoyoFactory Russia’s Victor Gravitsky maintained his 1A dominance in Russia and scored yet another title in Moscow yesterday. The ever-growing Russian scene held its 6th national contest over the weekend, including a strong open international division.

In 1A, right behind champion Gravitsky were Aero-Yo’s Sergey Bukanov and Cold Metal Strike Force’s Dron Glukhov. The Aero team also got first place in 3A with Stepan Kosintsev, and 4A with Rodion Sigov. 5A winner was this year’s EYYC runner-up Alexey Nemchik, also from team Cold Metal (thanks, RSFSR).

The open international division saw Singaporean World Champion Marcus Koh from Turning Point win the title, followed by YoyoFactory’ Augie Fash (USA) and Duncan Crew’s Kohta Watanabe (Japan).

Check out some clips from the contest, courtesy of 9.8 Yo-yos.

CLYW Team En Masse at EYYC

December 2, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

Looks like Prague will see the biggest reunion of the Caribou team yet. Confirmed presences so far for the Canadian manufacturer are all European team members: from Iceland, Palli Gudmundsson; from the UK, Krisztian Kaluzsa; from the Czech Republic itself, Petr Kavka and Zdenek Hybl. Norwegian skateboarding ninja Pekka Lovas is back on the team and will be attending EYYC as well. From the other side of the Atlantic, the rioting duo Abe Ziaimehr and John-Bot will be attending, and CLYW boss Chris Mikulin will also be there for the family meeting.

Krisztian placed 5th and Petr placed 7th in this year’s contest, and will no doubt be fighting for the title in 2012. Petr has been competing in several contests in the continent, including Hungarian Nationals, Spanish Nationals, Austria-Slovakia Nationals, and a 3rd place finish at the Czech Nationals back in October and should be well prepared for EYYC. Both are also competing in the international division of the Russian Yo-yo Contest this weekend in Moscow.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more EYYC updates and coverage!

Russian Yo-yo Contest International Division

November 30, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

On December 3rd and 4th, Moscow will host the sixth Russian Yo-yo Contest.

A very welcome addition this year is the Open International Division, which kicks off with a very strong line-up: world champions Marcus Koh (Singapore) and Kentaro Kimura (Japan) from Turning Point, Krisztian Kaluzsa (UK) and Petr Kavka (Czech Republic) from CLYW, Augie Fash, Ann Connolly (USA) and Vashek Kroutil (Czech Republic) from YoyoFactory, and Kohta Watanabe (Japan) from Duncan Crew will all compete in the new division, along with European champions Nandor Groger and David Molnar.

On the home front, YoyoFactory’s Victor Gravitsky will try to defend his title against an ever growing local competition. The Russian winner will receive a trip to the European Yo-yo Contest, to be held in January, in Prague. All divisions will be held for Russian players, including an Artistic Performance division.

In addition to the international guests, the Winter Aero-Yo Fest, featuring a range of juggling and skill toys, should make this a most excellent event!

Be sure to check the official contest page (in Russian) for more information.

Interview: Anthony Rojas

November 30, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

Today we interview RecRev’s pride, 44CLASH 1A champion Anthony Rojas!

YoYoNews: Thanks for joining us, Anthony!

Anthony Rojas: Glad to get a chance to be interviewed. Don’t think I’ve actually done one like this before.

Thanks to YoyoFactory’s Facebook page for the photo!

YN: Congratulations on your victory! How was the competition in Tokyo?

AR: Thank you! The contest was fantastic yet again. Top level players and freestyles, well organized, nice venue (it was crowded, but the vibe is fun), etc.

YN: How did Japan treat you? Did you tour much, or did you mostly kick it with the local players?

AR: Japan is great, I love visiting. This was my second time and I’m sure I’ll be back again one day. I stayed for ten days total, so I got a lot of touring done after the contest. Big city shopping and stuff, smaller areas with temples, new foods, all sorts of things.
The local players were a blast to hang out with and helped a ton. The first couple nights I was at Masanobu Iwata’s place. Yusuke Moriki actually stayed with the crew I was with and helped guide us around. I also got to hang with Kentaro, Shinji, Kohta, Dee, Tsubasa, and others.

YN: 44CLASH has quickly become one of the hottest contests on the scene, what makes it such a respected event?

AR: I think the way it’s put together and organized makes it top tier. Basically, they take the normal aspects of a contest, execute those things sublimely, and then add on top of that. All while pushing for a really fun atmosphere and overall enjoyable experience for everyone. Being open to all players helps bring in great talent. And having a contest that has a 50/50 tech. and perf. scores can give us interesting freestyles like Shu Takada’s wardrobe changing 2A routine, or the debut of Oni Gaga! If that sounds interesting at all, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Oh, and B-Grade Man visited. That’s extremely significant.

YN: You are able to stay competitive and keep your own unique style. Are you influenced by other players or do you focus on developing your own moves?

AR: I get inspired from various players all the time. The roots of inspiration for many of my main freestyle tricks probably come from Yuuki/ Jesse Garcia-like tech, and John Ando arm tricks. Those are probably most apparent. When I do want to do a trick with the same vibe as someone, or based off of one of there tricks, I always try to make it my own. Many ask how I come up with some of my crazier and weird looking moves. I do what feels right…and what doesn’t sometimes. Meaning, I often don’t mind pursuing ideas that seem awkward, uncomfortable, or silly at first, I’ll just find a way to make it look cool or flow or whatever in the end. I never force it though.

YN: You’ve competed a lot this year, from the smaller BLC and SoCal all the way to Nationals, Worlds and 44CLASH. What are your plans for next year?

AR: I’ll probably do the same I always go to. 44Clash is usually a “maybe” for a long time so I’m not sure about that one. I would like to visit some other US contests sometime, but it can be hard because of school and money, ya know.

YN: Awesome, good luck on future competitions! Thanks for your time and congratulations once again, Anthony! Any shout-outs to wrap this up?

AR: Shout out to all my yoyo friends, Japan, RecRev, and, um, B-Grade Man. 😀

Philippine Nationals: Sean Perez clinches 5th title!

November 28, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

The Philippine National yo-yo contest was held this weekend in Imus, right next to Manila, and all 5 divisions were disputed.

Over 70 players registered, making this one of the biggest national contests out there.

Kyle Capiral was the only competitor to repeat last year’s title, securing the 2A victory ahead of Martin Desamito and Hiro Koba.

Koba and Capiral switched places in 3A, with Koba in 1st place, Sean Perez in 2nd and Capiral in 3rd.

In 1A, last year’s winner Ernest Kahn was unable to repeat his good result and ended up in 4th place, behind winners Robert Tamayo, Reymark Zavalla, and Preslie Saraza.

5A also saw last year’s champion drop a couple of positions, with Duncan Crew’s Bryan Jardin finishing 3rd behind runner-up Paolo Alto and the new champion, Jaued Cervas.

The toughest battle was once again in 4A, with long time rivals and teammates Sean Perez and Paul Murillo battling for 1st place. In 2010, Murillo was able to secure the title, and this year he had the highest technical score (70.00 against Sean’s 68.30), but was beaten by Sean Perez in the Perfomance score (26.40 against 30.00), bringing the “Coffeeboy” back to the top for his 5th national title!

Full results can be found on the contest’s Facebook page.

EYYC to hold Women’s Division

November 23, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

From an announcement on the EYYC Facebook page:

1A Women’s three minute freestyle division is now a part of EYYC2012!

A major announcement, no doubt. While some may claim that top female players have no need for a separate division, as proved by Bu-ko and Jennifer Baybrook, this is a great opportunity and incentive for other female competitors to get up on stage and fight for a title.

C3’s newest team member, UK-based Corli du Toit, will surely be one of the favorites in this division. Russia has a relatively large number of female players as well, and should they attend EYYC, this will surely be a very competitive division!

Things are heating up in Europe for EYYC 2012!

November 21, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

The European Yo-yo Championship is closing in and the competition level promises to be higher than ever.

Last week at the Hungarian Nationals, the Open division was dominated by the Czech team Slusny: 1st place went to Robert Kucera, followed by Duncan Crew’s Tomás Bubák and YoyoFactory’s Vashek Kroutil. On the local division, the winner was One Drop’s Vilmos Zoltán Kiss, 2nd place was Yoyojam’s Bálint Farkas and 3rd place went to Ákos Lizenbold.

Also worth noting on the European front is Plamek’s recent move to team One Drop, after Hspin’s team’s demise.

The Russian National Yo-yo Contest is also just around the corner, and YoyoFactory’s Victor Gravitsky will try to defend his title against an ever-growing competition. World Champion Marcus Koh will also attend Russian Nationals as a guest!

Next week, Italian players will also compete in their National Contest, with guests Augie Fash and Vashek Kroutil.

Stay tuned for EYYC coverage and news as the event approaches!

AP 2012 Postponed

November 14, 2011 By Rafael Matsunaga

Colin Wan informs that next year’s Asia-Pacific Yo-yo Championships will be postponed:

It is with deep regret that I, along with the AP team, have to inform you that we will not be hosting the Asia Pacific Yo Yo Competition next year.

Despite garnering widespread support and expanding in terms of the number of countries and competitors each year,  the event has unfortunately been running at a deficit for the past few years, and it has been a challenge to secure sufficient sponsors.

Even at a deficit, we still continued to run previous competitions because we were committed to doing so.

Rather than to keep everyone in anticipation of next year’s event, we felt it would be the best and most respectful  thing to do, if we announce the postponement of AP in advance so you may make alternative plans.

The AP team remains committed to the AP competition as we have taken a lot of joy and pride in witnessing the exciting development of spin culture in Singapore and the region. We believe that yo yo as an alternative sport will continue to flourish. We especially see evidence of this positive development in the dynamic talent shown by our and regional players who have triumphed internationally.

Keep up with polishing your skills and we look forward to welcoming all of you to the next AP where we hope to see some fierce and exciting competition.

We thank you all for your understanding and continous support. Lets keep the yo-yo community growing!

Best Regards,

Colin Wan
