YoYo Review – C3YoYoDesign Level 6

March 21, 2014 By The Neandronaut

C3YoYoDesign Level 6

Width: 41.03 mm /  inches

The C3YoYoDesign Level 6 is the Hong Kong company’s latest release, and another example of the high level of yoyo design that is accessible at the $50 price point. Designed as a lower cost version of their premium model the Krown, the Level 6 is a narrower, heavier, and less refined yoyo designed to be machined more expeditiously. While this sounds like a negative, it’s not; the changes in design allow for a yoyo that holds spin exceptionally, cuts through any maneuver you can create, and retails for 1/3rd the price of C3’s premium offerings.

The concentrated rim weight and straighter wall angles on the inner cup give the Level 6 a dense feel in the hand and on the string…this yoyo certainly feels heavier than it is. But the faultless balance and excelsior weight distribution result in a yoyo that simply feels sturdy, but not unwieldy. It hits the end of the string smoothly without the *thud* normally associated with heavier yoyos, and it’s here that C3YoYoDesign’s capabilities as yoyo designers really shine. The yoyo spins perfectly smooth and holds spin exceptionally well through both standard and horizontal tricks, and the concentrated rim weight makes the Level 6 one of the most stable yoyos available in any price range. The response is a standard 19mm slim pad, which gives you a myriad of options for customizing the response.

The Level 6 comes in a wide variety of colors and finishes, all of them beautifully applied. I reviewed the EYYC Limited Edition and found the finish to be even in all areas with no discoloration, and the engraving to be crisp, clear, and easy to read. The EYYC logo in particular has some incredibly diminutive print under the main logo-the lettering for the words “European YoYo Championship Budapest 2014” is only 0.86mm high, and yet the engraving is perfectly legible! The Level 6 logo is another fine example of C3YoYoDesign’s excellent eye for branding, and for anyone who doubts the quality of products manufactured in China I would point you to C3YoYoDesign as an example of what can be done if you are willing to oversee production in person, work with respected factories, and pay well for their services. Our review model was absolutely perfect, and as have been all other production metal yoyos we’ve seen from them. C3YoYoDesign even achieves the laudable feat of making the industry standard “square plastic box” look elegant with a matte finish, excellent graphic design, and a higher quality of plastic than what most companies use.

VALUE

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Price:” rating=”5/5″ group=”s1″ ][/xrrgroup]

The C3YoYoDesign Level 6 retails for $50, and undoubtedly holds its own against the rest of the offerings in that price range. The Level 6 is agile, stable, and of a build and finish quality that rivals many yoyos that are twice the price. For anyone looking for a durable throw with a bit of heft, or looking to explore the metal offerings from C3YoYoDesign without breaking the bank, the Level 6 is a marvelous full-sized player at a bargain price.

YoYo Review – CLYW Gnarwhal 2

YoYo Review - CLYW Gnarwhal 2

CLYW Gnarwhal 2 Specs:

Diameter: 53.2mm /  2.095 inches
Width: 43.4mm / 1.705 inches
Gap Width: 4.16 mm / 0.164 inches
Weight:  65.4 grams
Bearing Size: CBC 10-Ball CTX (.250 x .500 x .187)
Response: Snow Tires

The Gnarwhal 2 is an indefectible example of the play benefits of a mid-size yoyo…all the stability of a full-size model and the speed and liveliness of an undersized throw. Mid-sized yoyos are something of an anomaly in the yoyo industry; never as fashionable as full-size yoyos for competitors, and not as economical as most undersized throws. They’re arduous to execute well, but as you’d expect CLYW has done an prodigious job with the Gnarwhal 2. It functions every bit as thoroughly as the rest of their wares, while coming in just a bit smaller, lighter, and faster than the rest of their models. The Gnarwhal 2 traverses through tricks with alacrity, leaves plenty of room for even the most complicated of mounts, and moves faster than most players can probably regulate. The speed of the yoyo is probably its only downfall, as many players lack the mastery to be able to reign in a yoyo that moves this expeditiously.

Beautifully machined and finished, the Gnarwhal 2 is right at home in the CLYW lineup. Our review model is the “Concrete Blizzard” color way, which is an admirable anodization scheme that looks marvelous either still or spinning. The Gnarwhal 2 arrives in CLYW’s quintessential stamped brown box, featuring revised Gnarwhal artwork by the incomparable Jason Week. CLYW’s branding is uncomplicated, sincere, and leaves a lasting impression…which is everything that branding should be. The architecture of the yoyo is an appealing refinement of the original Gnarwhal that looks as comfortable and appealing as it feels. CLYW yoyos are not elaborate, and rarely feature engraving of any kind but this feeds directly into their brand aesthetic and it fits superbly.

VALUE

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Price:” rating=”4/5″ group=”s1″ ][/xrrgroup]

At $135 retail, the Gnarwhal 2 is an exceptional yoyo at a premium price. Not a casual purchase, but if you’re a dedicated player then it’s hard to refute the value once this yoyo is in your hand. For a well-designed machine whose capabilities will surely exceed your own skill, the price is most reasonable.

YoYo Review – Square Wheels Rockefeller

June 7, 2013 By The Neandronaut

Square Wheels Rockefeller YoYo

The Square Wheels “Rockefeller”

Specs

Diameter: 54.86 mm / 2.16 inches
Width: 45.20 mm / 1.78 inches
Gap Width: 4.35 mm / .17 inches
Weight: 66.4 grams
Bearing Size: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187)
Response: 19mm Silicone Slim Pad

PLAY

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Stability:” rating=”4/5″ group=”s1″ ] [xrr label=”Float:” rating=”0/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Heft:” rating=”5/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Design:” rating=”3/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Smoothness:” rating=”4/5″ group=”s1″][xrr label=”Response:” rating=”5/5″ group=”s1″][/xrrgroup]

Overall, the Rockefeller is an paradigmatic modern metal yoyo. It’s machined satisfactorily, anodized properly, plays agreeably, can handle most everything I threw at it, appears winsome on the shelf, and feels copacetic in the hand. It is not remarkable in any way, although players will find that it throws a bit ponderously and hits the hand with a solid THWACK when it returns. Players looking for something “floaty” should look elsewhere, as this 66-gram yoyo assuredly plays heavier than you would surmise.

LOOKS

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Surface Finish:” rating=”5/5″ group=”s1″ ] [xrr label=”Packaging:” rating=”1/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Branding:” rating=”1/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Artwork:” rating=”1/5″ group=”s1″][/xrrgroup]

The yoyo is machined and anodized exquisitely! Players who are quick to grieve about anodizing flaws are not likely to find any here. The receptacle for this fine metal bandalore is a lackluster brown card stock box, as is typical of most small-run metal manufacturers these days. The logo and model name are printed on the lid of the box, but rather matter-of-factly. There is little to no reason to retain the packaging for the Square Wheels Rockefeller unless you’re obsessive compulsive or have a strong tendency towards flipping your yoyos within a fortnight.

VALUE

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Price:” rating=”3/5″ group=”s1″ ][/xrrgroup]

At a retail price of $135 USD, the Rockefeller is not going to win any accolades for value. But to be fair, the cost of machining something in the United States when you don’t own the machine shop can get out of hand expeditiously. Add the cost of a 3-color anodized finish and that hobby yoyo company you started becomes very expensive, very quickly. I don’t find the cost of the yoyo to be prohibitive or unreasonable, but that doesn’t make it any more economical.

The Square Wheels Rockefeller is a dependable throw made by excelsior people here in the United States. They sponsor and organize contests, they sponsor players, they support the yoyoing scene. If you like the appearance of this yoyo and prefer a hearty, solid throw, do endeavor to purchase one!
