There was no discard during Evan Nagao’s routine. Why did he get marked down for one? Also, in my opinion, he should have scored higher in music use and space use, and his showmanship should’ve been a perfect 5– after all, he did receive a standing ovation from the crowd.

Watch the end of Evan’s routine. By rule if the yoyo isn’t fully wound in the players hand ready to throw at the end of the routine it is considered a discard.

Here is the rule passage: “If the contestant cannot make the yo-yo come back to the hand fully wound and ready to throw, both a stop and a discard will be counted as a discard (minus 3). The string can have knots or be jammed, yet it needs to be fully wound to avoid the deduction.”

A standing ovation does not mean a perfect performance score from trained judges.
