July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

Harrison Lee - TEDxKids@BC

Canadian National Champion and CLYW team member Harrison Lee has just been announced as a speaker and performer at the TEDxKids @BC event, to be held Sunday, November 16th in Burnaby, BC, Canada. Congratulations, Harrison!

About TEDxKids@BC

Some of BC’s most awe-inspiring kids are showcased at TEDxKids@BC. Remarkable people with young hearts share their stories borne from genuine curiosity & bold ideas. Our mission is to connect with TED and the open idea sharing principles of TED with kids and people passionate about empowering kids

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Ed Haponik – Trickcircles 3.0

July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

Ed Haponik dropped a 5-minute video of his greatest hits from the past three months of his #trickcircle posts on Instagram, and it’s burly stuff. Lots of fixed axle goodness, and more impossible kickflips that you can shake a stick at. Crazy good!

Yoyeando Ando ft. Paul Kerbel

July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

The Mexican YoYo Association just dropped another video with a massive trick dump from National Champion Paul Kerbel. If you don’t think he’s one of the most skilled and creative yoyo players in the world, watch this video. If you still don’t think so after watching it, you are wrong and I pity you. The video also features a guest appearance by Sergio Daniel Licona, being all awesome and stuff.

Yoyos used are the YoYoFactory Horizon and Aviator.

2014 IYYC – Molnar vs Jardin

July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

Duncan International YoYo Championship IYYC

Duncan’s International YoYo Championship is just around the corner, and they’ve announced an incredible roster of talent that they are flying in to compete in their event! Some of the top players from around the world are being flown to Orlando to compete against each other for more than $17,000 in cash prizes! Who will come out on top? We’ll be taking a look at some of the players Duncan has invited, and we want to know: who do YOU think is going to win?
Our second match-up: David Molnar vs. Bryan Jardin!

MolnarVsJardin

David Molnar is a 2x European 5A Champion, 2x Hungarian 5A Champion, and has racked up contest wins in the 5A division in Italy, the Czech Republic, and the UK. He’s an absolute powerhouse of a player, and also has a slew of titles and Top 3 finishes in the 1A, 3A, and 4A divisions all across Europe. Sponsored by C3YoYoDesign with a new signature yoyo, the Dymension, David is a force to be reckoned with in multiple divisions and if he’s on his game he could come away with a crazy amount of prize money from the International YoYo Championship.

Bryan Jardin is a 5x Philippines 5A Champion, and a 2x winner of the 5A division at the highly competitive Asia Pacific YoYo Championship. One of Duncan’s true star players, Bryan’s counterweight play is fast, smooth, stylish, and he has one tremendous advantage over David: the IYYC event is in Florida, and that weather (even for an indoor event) has been known to wreak havoc on players and their equipment. Bryan has the home-field advantage here, and won’t be suffering from the jet lag that David will be fighting at the event.

Who do you think will place higher in the 5A division at the 2014 International YoYo Championship…David Molnar or Bryan Jardin? Cast your vote below!

YoYoFactory Goldfish Shutter

July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

Every once in a while, there is a perfect convergence of random hilarity and capability, and we get something like this.

A relatively new player had been borrowing his friend’s YoYoFactory Shutter, but didn’t have money for his own. So he sent this image in an email to YoYoFactory:

YoYoFactory Goldfish Shutter

That email arrived in Ben McPhee’s Inbox at 9 AM while he was getting coffee and checking YoYoFactory’s customer service emails. By 10 am, YoYoFactory had created two of these, and emailed the player back for his mailing address:

YoYoFactory Goldfish Shutter

Not for retail sale, this limited edition of two Shutters is officially the best possible response to a customer service email, ever. One went to the player who drew the goldfish, the other one is going to Gentry.

High five, YoYoFactory.

2014 World YoYo Contest Posters

July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

2014 World YoYo Contest

The 2014 World YoYo Contest is almost here, and the local promotion for the event is in full swing! For the first time in the contest’s modern history, there is a tremendous amount of local promotion happening in order to bring non-players in to witness the event. The contest venue, the Archa Theatre, is in the heart of Prague and easily accessible by the general public. With a standing capacity of 1200 and plenty of amenities, the venue lends itself well to a non-player crowd. To help spread modern yoyoing and give the top players in the world a packed audience for their performances, the contest organizers have placed some huge and amazing posters all around the city! These posters are going to be the ultimate collectible if you can score one after the event. Congrats to Korda and the rest of the organizers…this year’s contest really does look like it’s going to be the biggest and best modern World YoYo Contest, and it’s setting the bar high for next years event in Japan!
