YoYoRecreation Announces POM Diffusion

March 16, 2016 By Steve Brown

yoyorecreation POM Diffusion

Yoyorecreation announced some new releases for EYYC…new colorways of the Gargantua, Start The Riot, and Draupnir, but the most interesting news is the release of a POM Diffusion. We know these will be available first at EYYC (Prague) and 44Festival (Japan), but we don’t have anything in the way of specs yet.

Blasted POM sounds fun, even if there really aren’t any advantages to using this material over just making a low-cost aluminum yoyo. And the vibe issues are a little worrying, but maybe they won’t be as bad as they sound. Either way, for Yoyorecreation fans this sounds like a pretty sweet release! Check out Yoyorecreation’s statement below.

POM Diffusion

The Diffusion was renowned for changing the plastic yo-yo market with it’s revolutionary axle configuration, but in an effort to push the performance even further we experimented with using POM material (Polyacetal). These POM prototypes were a huge hit with our team, and so we are pleased to announce that we will be making a full production run!*

The higher density of POM material compared to the polycarbonate of the original Diffusion gives the POM Diffusion much more of a solid feel on the string, and a much more powerful spin. The POM Diffusion is given a blasted finish, which compliments the already smooth texture of the POM material. It is completely different to the touch compared to the regular Diffusion.

* – Due to the way POM shrinks during the manufacturing process, these Diffusions may suffer more vibe than the regular Diffusions. For the same reason, the pad size of these models is different from the standard YYR pad size, and will require a pad with a 19mm outer diameter. Since this will be a super limited-run, these yo-yos will be blank. This run will not ship with a slim bearing like with the regular Diffusions.

First Look: YoYofficer x Barely Legal – Nifty

July 8, 2014 By Steve Brown

YoYofficer and Barely Legal have released a new collaboration yoyo, called “Nifty”. This might well be the first collaboration between a Chinese manufacturer and a European brand, and it looks pretty good. The video features Barely Legal team members Robert Kučera, Zdeněk Hýbl, Adam Hutchinson, Daniel Hotový, and Ondřej Dolejš.

Check out pics, specs, and full details below.

Barely Legal is small Czech brand, run by Czech national champion Robert Kucera and former CLYW team member Zdenek Hybl. Yoyofficer joined forces with Barely guys to make our first collaboration model, NIFTY!

Nifty was designed in close cooperation between our two companies and than manufactured by Yoyofficer, to ensure great build quality, beautiful colors and smooth blasted surface.
We all love Nifty’s performance, it offers great combination of lower weight and powerful spin. It can play really fast and agile, but still has good stability and spin time for long combos. And thanks to open stepped V-shape, landing tricks is as easy as it gets.

Nifty is beautiful design, competition beast that is yet really fun to play and costs just 70$!

CLYW Sasquatch Release

June 26, 2014 By YoYoNews

Sasquatch with Box

The Sasquatch is BACK! One of CLYW’s longest-spinning and most stable yoyos to date has been updated with new weight distribution and new colorways. Unseen for a few years, the Sasquatch was originally designed as an upsized version of the Gnarwhal but quickly built itself a reputation as an absolute monster on the string.

This full-sized yoyo is just a hair wider than the original, less than one millimeter, but the response area has been carved out a bit to accept Snow Tires and the weight was pushed outward just a little…enough to make a noticeable difference in increased speed, spin time and stability.

The Sasquatch is an all-new monster…smoother, a little bit faster, more stable, and ready to handle the toughest tricks you can imagine. Available worldwide on June 26th at 10 pm EST / 7 pm PDT (June 27th at 2 am GMT) at the following retailers:

North America:

Monkeyfinger G-Squared Co-Lab YoYo

Monkeyfinger & G-Squared have announced a new collaborative design, named the “Co-Lab”. Full production will be in stores shortly after, and will run $110 – $130.

Production has been delayed, and these will NOT be available for sale at California States. Here’s the word from Monkeyfinger:

Fans and Friends: While we were boxing up the new Co-Lab project, a manufacturing flaw was found that would shorten product play life. As yo-yoers ourselves, MFD and G2’s would never release a product with a known defect. Our Integrity and commitment to our fans prevents us from passing a flaw’ed yoyo to you, the community. While Chris Allen will have a few prototypes you can try at Cal States, the Co-Lab will not be for sale and the retail run will be delayed as we re-work the production phase.

Yomega & YoYoJam Announce New Collaboration

February 13, 2014 By Steve Brown

YoYoJam x Yomega

Yomega Corp and YoYoJam have announced a truly unusual collaboration…three new plastic yoyos manufactured by YoYoJam that will be distributed exclusively to specialty and mass-market retail outlets by Yomega!

I spoke with Yomega President Todd Rywolt about the collaboration, and he gave me some insight into the project.

We are launching three “YoyoJam X Yomega” models at the International Toy Fair in New York this month; the Journey, Odyssey and Firestorm.  As you are well aware, Journey has been a beginner’s staple for years but has never been broadly marketed.  We think it’s significant that a legendary throw (previously only sold at “boutique” toy stores and websites) will now reach a mass audience. The Odyssey is a re-vamped version of the original Surge design, with a new name and logo, again brought to a broader audience than ever before.  Firestorm is an all-new design – an incredibly solid, super-smooth new plastic yoyo.

All three will be responsive out of the package with a half-spec bearing, but can be made unresponsive by cleaning the bearing or replacing it with a standard C-size bearing.  All three models will continue YoYoJam’s tradition of being made in the USA, but with all-new package touting YoyoJam X Yomega.  We think this is pretty exciting news and will help bring in new players!

YoYoJam x Yomega Firestorm

All three models should begin shipping to retailers in early March, and should be on shelves shortly after. We won’t know until after Toy Fair if any mass market retailers will be stocking these, but we’ll update if we hear anything!

Specs and pics of all three models below. And YoYoNews has a FULL SET of these new yoyos that we’re giving away! Just reply to this article and tell us why you want them…we’ll pick one lucky winner on Monday, February 17th to get all three yoyos before they are available in stores!

UPDATE: Congratulations to Christian, our lucky winner!

2014 International Toy Fair Preview – Duncan Toys

January 30, 2014 By Steve Brown

The 2014 International Toy Fair in New York City is just around the corner, and that means plenty of new products from the top yoyo manufacturers!

Our first Toy Fair preview of the year comes from Duncan Toys, who has a surprising number of new releases slated for the year. Although the cover of their catalog features a huge logo for their 85th Anniversary, they don’t seem to be releasing any anniversary-themed products, and don’t make any mention of any anniversary events or releases. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any actual anniversary promotions from Duncan this year, especially now that Sales & Marketing Coordinator Brandon Jackson has moved down to Orlando to manage Duncan’s Disney retail cart and partnership. Duncan Toys looks to be short-handed at the moment, so if you ever wanted to work in the yoyo industry and live in rural Ohio…here’s your chance!

First up…licensed Ignite yoyos for Despicable Me 2! The Ignite has Brake Pad response and a replaceable wooden axle sleeve that you can easily swap out for the bearing assembly from a Duncan BumbleBee. All five designs are in Toys R Us stores across the US now and retail for only $5.99, and Despicable Me 2 (which is a great movie, by the way) has been out on DVD and Blu-Ray since December 2013, so you probably have it already. Or you should. Really, it’s great.

Duncan Toys 2014 Catalog - Despicable Me 2

Next up we have the Hello Kitty yoyos that we first reported on last July. There are two models available, a ProYo and a Butterfly XT, each model with four different designs. These don’t seem to be shipping yet, but the ProYo version will retail for $5.99 and the Butterfly XT will retail for $9.99. Expect to see these in mass market outlets in the spring, if not sooner!

2014 Duncan Toys Catalog - Hello Kitty Licensed YoYos

Duncan jumped in the kendama game last fall with the release of their Komodo kendamas, first shown on YoYoNews last July. New for this year is the Venom kendama, which appears to be identical to the Komodo but with a different paint finish on the tama that promises to be tackier, making balance tricks like Lighthouse and Bird a bit easier. The catalog photo is just a digital mockup, and we don’t have confirmation on a retail price or availability yet. but the Venom is actually shipping to retailers now with a retail price of around $24.99.

2014 Duncan Toys Catalog - Venom Kendama

We’ve already seen the Echo 2, a revamped version of the ill-recieved Echo from a few years back. The Echo 2 seems to very much right the wrongs of its predecessor, and is quickly becoming a 1A favorite among Duncan’s sponsored team.

But new for a US release is the Torque, a re-branded version of Duncan’s metal “Torquave” yoyo created for Bandai’s Hyper YoYo campaign. We’re guessing the specs are the same; 55mm diameter, 43mm width, and weighing in at 66 grams with Duncan’s large bearing setup. The Torquave was scheduled for a February 2014 release in Japan but if Duncan is releasing it here…does that mean that Bandai will not be releasing it themselves? The Torque/Torquave is a new design that we assume was created specifically for Bandai and they have a history of preferring that their exclusives stay exclusive. The Torque photos are also just digital renders…so if this was already supposed to be ready to release in Japan in just a few days and Duncan didn’t have samples for photography in time for their catalog, it’s quite possible this product isn’t even ready yet, and the launch isn’t going to happen at all in Japan. Mysteries!

UPDATED INFO: The Torquave IS still being released in Japan, production is currently underway, and the catalog photos of the Torque are actual product photos that were only digitally colored. No more mysteries!

2014 Duncan Toys Catalog Echo 2 & Torque

Duncan has three new plastic performance yoyos coming this summer, two for 1A and a new offstring yoyo. The Featherhawk and Firehawk are identical yoyos, just with different weight rings; the Featherhawk comes with Duncan’s new plastic Performance Rings, while the Firehawk comes stock with metal Performance Rings.

The Skyhawk is the new offstring yoyo, and comes stock with the metal Performance Rings. Offstring seems like a pretty small category for Duncan to need to produce another specialty yoyo for, especially since they don’t really do much to promote the style of play. But maybe this one will turn out to be more to the players’ liking than the Hayabusa which was good but never seemed to gain much traction outside of Duncan’s sponsored team.

Duncan’s Performance Rings were first shown at last year’s International Toy Fair, although Duncan never did manage to actually produce and ship them. Hopefully they, along with these Hawk yoyos, don’t suffer the same fate this year.

2014 Duncan Toys Catalog - Firehawk, Featherhawk, Skyhawk

And finally we have a better look at Duncan’s new Performance Rings, as well as two new versions of their Mod Spacers. The Mod Spacers were originally developed as part of the Pro-Z yoyo, making it a “convertible” model from standard shape to Butterfly shape. Mod Spacers offer an option for players to refresh their existing Duncan products, especially now that Duncan is offering Mod Spacers designed for offstring play, as well as another set that converts your Duncan yoyo for use with a large bearing. Since Duncan hasn’t updated the bearing and response setups of most of their plastic yoyos, the Mod Spacers can serve as a welcome upgrade for players who enjoy the brand but are frustrated with some of the outdated designs.

2014 Duncan Toys Catalog - Performance Rings & Mod Spacers

All in all, looks like Duncan has a lot to offer at the 2014 International Toy Fair, although some of these products were shown last year and never materialized and the Hawk series and Torque are all just digital mockups. The licensed items are available now (Despicable Me 2) or hopefully very soon (Hello Kitty) and the Venom kendama will likely be available in just a couple of months…but with a “Summer 2014” release mentioned for the Torque, Hawk series, and the Performance Rings, it’s possible that we won’t see them until Fall/Winter 2014.

YoYo Drop – CLYW Puffin 2

January 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

CLYW Puffin 2

On Friday January 24th at 7pm (Mountain time) CLYW are going to be releasing Palli’s brand new signature throw, the Puffin 2, at CLYW.ca. Chris dropped a HUGE amount of backstory to this design, and it’s definitely worth the read…quoted below!

As Palli started to add more complex tricks and longer more challenging combos to his freestyles he felt that he needed an update to his original design. So we listened! What Palli had on his wish list was:

  • Keep the diameter and width the same
  • Make the catch zone of the profile steeper to allow for horizontal tricks
  • Make it spin longer
  • Make it more stable
  • Remove the nipple to make it easier to do finger tricks
  • Keep the outer rims the same
  • Reduce the side wall for easier horizontal tricks

So once we were ready Charles and I got on Skype with Palli and got to work on the design. We started off with the original CAD model of the Puffin, since we knew Palli wanted to keep the same diameter and width while keeping the outer rims the same. So first on the list was remove the bump on the catch zone and reduce the side wall. We kept playing with the angles and curves to see what type of surface would blend well between the two points. Eventually we got to a really nice flowing organic shape and would allow us to still distribute the rim weight in the inner hub. The profile looked too smooth though and needed something to break it up, and a subtle edge in the profile near the outer rim fixed that. Once we were happy with the catch zone we moved onto the inner hub.

To get the Puffin 2 to be more stable and spin longer, we had to remove the double rings. The double rings really made the original unique, but it really hurt us on maximizing rim weight with a mid sized throw, they seem to work a lot better for full sized throws like the Chief. Plus the double rings also add a level of complexity to machining. Eventually after some playing around we got to a really nice sort of wing like shape on the inner hub that made us think of Puffin wing tips. Then we made our way to the nipple and shrunk it down. Palli wanted to make it as short as possible, but still keep it there. In order to do this we had to switch to the same short axle system that we use on the Canvas/Arctic Circle.

The whole process was quite iterative, where I would make changes in CAD while Palli was watching and he would ‘Yay or Nay’ it. It was a lot of fun being able to work on this together and have Charles there to see how the whole design process works. The end result we felt was a much better representation of ‘a Puffin’. It’s definitely way more bird like, it fits Palli’s tricks better and Palli was involved in the whole process. An interesting fact about the 2014 lineup was that all 4 of the new models were designed over the course of 3 days and only 1 of the 4 had to go to a 2nd prototype (the Bonfire). This was definitely a first for CLYW.

Width: 1.752″ (44.5mm)

First Look – YoYoFactory Hubstack Afterglow

January 17, 2014 By Steve Brown

YoYoFactory Hubstack Afterglow

YoYoNews has your first look at the newest plastic yoyo by industry leader YoYoFactory…the Hubstack Afterglow!

The Hubstack is a new plastic yoyo from YoYoFactory featuring a new body shape that appears to be modeled slightly after their wildly popular Shutter yoyo released last year. The Hubstack features a refined version of the “zero wall” design that YoYoFactory pioneered several years ago, and the Afterglow version comes in glow in the dark plastic with an internal LED light board. The yoyo lights up when it spins, and the light from the LEDs charges the glow plastic, making for a fantastic effect in the dark that basically recharges itself.

YoYoFactory Hubstack Afterglow

The Hubstack Afterglow is the final release in the YoYoFactory Glow Collection and the first release of the Hubstack yoyo, which will be released in a non-glow, non-lighted version later this year. The Hubstack Afterglow is shipping to stores soon, and has a release date of January 27th, 2014. Also released at the same time will be a redesigned version of YoYoFactory’s CzechMate yoyo (signature model for European Champion Vashek Kroutil) with changes to size, weight distribution, and price.
