Whimsy YoYos Returns With Bi-Metal Aloha Encore

After a two-year hiatus, Whimsy YoYos is back!

The company that brought us the Poker Face, Aloha, Roar, and OMG are back with a new bi-metal release, the Aloha Encore, and it’s their strongest design yet. Incorporating design elements from the Aloha, the most popular of their original releases, and upgrading it with new weight distribution and stainless steel weight rings, the Aloha Encore aims to be a new competition yoyo from the reborn Whimsy YoYos. We got a chance to play with one of these pre-release models and it’s definitely a great upgrade from the original Aloha…lots more power but still feels great in the hand.

A limited pre-release (plus some b-grades) will be available direct from the Whimsy website on April 28th, with a full retail release of the Aloha Encore following shortly after. Check out specs and more pics below!

The Roar is the latest budget metal performance yoyo from Hong Kong company Whimsy.

PLAY

The Roar packs a lot of play into a body shape that works great for both 1A and 3A. Profiles like this have become the industry standard for 3A players, and it’s great to see something catering to this style of play in the budget price range. The Roar is a stable yoyo that plays really fast…the wide gap gives you almost no friction on the string and this yoyo really zips around quickly when you get it moving. It’s got a stability that you don’t normally find in budget models, and feels spectacular in the hand.

The Roar might be the most universal, “all around” yoyo that Whimsy has produced yet, and it’s got the chops to be a great competition yoyo or just a top-notch everyday carry.

LOOKS

Whimsy has made a huge effort from the start to really focus on top notch graphics, and the Roar doesn’t disappoint. Our review model is a special edition created for 44Clash in Japan, with a great collaborative logo. The production model features a lion illustration that ties in better to the name of the yoyo, and looks equally awesome. The finish is top-notch and the graphic design from Whimsy has been consistently fantastic since their first release, the Pokerface.

VALUE

The Roar retails for only $50, making it a great deal for any level of player looking for an aluminum yoyo with great performance on a budget. It’s hard to believe that such a young company can put out a yoyo with this level of performance at this price, but here it is! The Whimsy Roar is definitely worth every penny.

First Look – Pokerface by Whimsy *UPDATED*

Looks like we have another boutique yoyo manufacturer!

Whimsy is a new yoyo manufacturer based in Hong Kong, and they’re kicking things off with some really nice branding and packaging for their first model, the Pokerface. The finish is an acid wash anodization, but the side art appears to just be a sticker is a printed plastic sidecar that is friction fit in the side of the yoyo (see below for better image). There are three variations of this same model; the Spade, the Heart, and the Joker, each with different color ano and different side art, at a retail price of $125 $90.  There are also flocked versions of each, which sounds cool but as we learned from the folly of the Duncan Velvet, flocking on yoyos doesn’t hold up very well. The flocked versions also retail for a whopping $185, which isn’t going to see them flying off the shelves anytime soon $120, which is better but still going to be a tough sell in today’s metal market.

The packaging is great, just a small box that perfectly mimics the box that a deck of cards comes in. The art and layout look to be really well done…great presentation for a first release! Hopefully the yoyo plays as good as it looks.
