First Look – CLYW Metal Yeti

December 18, 2018 By Steve Brown

CLYW is closing out the year with a bang with a limited release of the Metal Yeti, the latest model in the Yeti line. With just a few pieces released to a couple of retailers, this limited pre-release did pretty well considering no one knew it was coming! The full release is scheduled for mid-January, and it will be available worldwide.

Check out CLYW’s release info and full specs for the Metal Yeti below!

We are beyond thrilled to introduce the Metal Yeti.

The Yeti has been our most challenging project ever. Two plastic iterations came and went with varying degrees of success, rife with challenges, and both ended their lifespans early due to production problems that we just couldn’t quite solve. But the shape and the feel were just too. damn. good and we couldn’t give up on it, so we went back to what we do best…precision metal.

The Metal Yeti is a beautiful halfway point between nostalgia and the new new, with a play style that really makes us feel like it’s an instant classic. (Fun fact, the hub stickers are left over from the very first Yeti production run!) Something about this return top is just “perfect Caribou” and none of us can put our prototypes down. We’re so excited for everyone to try these that we even made a lot more than usual to get the price down so that we could make them even more affordable.

METAL YETI SPECS:

DIAMETER: 58.6 MM
WIDTH: 45 MM
WEIGHT: 67 GRAMS
BEARING: SIZE C CENTER TRAC™
RESPONSE: SNOW TIRES
SUGGESTED RETAIL: $65 USD

BOX INCLUDES:

ASSEMBLED RETURN TOP
FAT KITTY STRING
YETI STICKER SHEET
LIMITED EDITION HARD ENAMEL PIN

First Look – YoYofficer Blossom (Ryosuke Ito Signature)

June 22, 2018 By Steve Brown

Yoyofficer Blossom - Ryosuke Ito

We’ve got your first look at the new YoYofficer Blossom, the signature model for Ryosuke Ito and the first signature model from YoYofficer! Here’s their description:

The YoYofficer Blossom was designed with Ryosuke’s play style in mind, and was named by his wife and his daughter.

Lightweight yet long spinning, this yoyo has a great explosive power and also features a shallower gap than usual to make binds and regens easier even in slow spin situations, a necessity for 3a players.

A thinner string would also make this yoyo incredible for other styles of play like 1a.

We picked 4 beautiful, eye-catching colors for our first signature release.

We love this new model and hope you will too.

YoYofficer Blossom Specs:

Diameter: 55.2 mm
Width: 43.6 mm
Weight: 64.3g
Bearing: Size C (Large)
Suggested Retail: $70 USD — $130/pair
Release Date : June 26th, 2018

First Look: CLYW Pickaxe

January 26, 2018 By Steve Brown

CLYW has announced their first new model of 2018, the Pickaxe! Designed to be a kind of “mini Chief”, the shape and features are familiar, but at a 52mm diameter it’s a very different yoyo. From their site:

Introducing: the Pickaxe.

With a focus on fun over competition specs, the Pickaxe is an undersized version of our long-time standard bearer, the Chief. Featuring our iconic double-rim design and an incredibly comfortable profile, the Pickaxe is designed to be hurled around with reckless abandon while you work out ridiculous tricks that will score zero points.

Remember when you spent four days coming up with picture tricks that were all inside jokes about your friends? Remember when it was 4 am at Worlds and you accidentally hit that one triangle that you still don’t understand how it works? Remember when there were 40 people in Paul Escolar’s hotel room at Las Vegas Open and Bryan Figueroa did that thing and Steve called it The Doughy Frenchman and everyone giggled for like 20 minutes?

That’s what the Pickaxe is for. Have fun!

CLYW PICKAXE SPECS:

DIAMETER – 52.4 MM
WIDTH – 41.3 MM
WEIGHT – 64.4 GRAMS
RESPONSE – SNOW TIRES
BOX ART – MIKE LUNDY
RETAIL PRICE: $85-$95 USD

First Look – G Squared Ghost YoYo

June 15, 2017 By Steve Brown

G Squared Ghost plastic yoyo

We have your first look at the new machined plastic yoyo from G Squared! Check out full specs and more pics below, along with details on the release direct from G Squared.

The Ghost is G2’s first attempt at a plastic yoyo, but this is no ordinary plastic. Jake decided to design a yoyo using PTFE (Teflon), you know the stuff the is used as a coating for your non-stick pots and pans.  Besides the obvious grindability reasons, PTFE was used to take advantage of the plastics higher density. Allowing for thinner walls and more aggressive weight distribution than most plastic yoyos on the market today.

The Ghost will be released in white with multiple hub colorways throughout the summer starting in late July. Estimated retail is $65.  Want one before then? You might be lucky enough to snag one from the G2 booth at Ohio States or SEC.

Both the design and play were greatly inspired from the Banshee which can easily been seen from the angles in catch zone, along with the speed and agility felt on the string.

G Squared Ghost Specs:

Diameter – 57mm
Width – 43.04 mm
Weight – 66.5 grams
Material – PTFE
Gap – 4.5mm
Response – G19 Pads
Bearing – Size C (Ships with Boss Rage and Wrath bearings)

First Look – Throw Revolution Kaiser

March 9, 2017 By Steve Brown

Throw Revolution Kaiser yoyo

We’ve got a look at the newest release from World YoYo Champion Marcus Koh’s brand, Throw Revolution!

The Kaiser is a monometal yoyo made of 7075 aluminum, and designed to perform to Marcus’ exacting standards. His goal with the Kaiser was bi-metal performance in a monometal yoyo…not the easiest thing to accomplish, but we look forward to trying one and seeing how close he got. Check out Throw Revolution’s info below, along with more pics and full specs. The Kaiser is available March 14th at 8 pm SGT at the Throw Revolution store, and hits retailers soon after.

When the Kaiser was made, It was designed to bring out a Bi-metal performance in a mono-metal yo-yo. This Yo-Yo was made for the aspiring competitor, not just any competitor. But for the one who dares to be a champion.

We wanted a Yo-Yo that is able to comfortably return to your hands. This is an important aspect which is often overlooked, as it ensures that your next throw will always a good one. Specially for freestyles when you have to bind from a strong spin due to a music cue.

The Kaiser was designed with step curved Rims to rest perfectly on your hands.

The Kaiser needed to be a yo-yo that stands out. We experimented by introducing a new twist to the way its being anodized by giving it a raw finished cut around the hub of the Kaiser.

The end result was Stunning. It was a design that stood out immediately, which made the Kaiser uniquely identifiable.

With the Kaiser’s release approaching, we’re staying true to our company’s mission.

“To unleash the greatness in you, and provide the highest standards of excellence at ThrowRevolution.“

And you’ll be the first one to receive the “Revolutionary Experience”, a special 1-on-1 coaching session with Marcus Koh when you purchase a Kaiser today.

Throw Revolution Kaiser Specs:

Finish: Smooth Beadblast
Weight: 65.9g
Diameter: 56.11 mm
Width: 44.59 mm
Bearing: 10 Ball Concave
Price: $89 USD

Levels of stability and momentum at a weight you can’t reach without the usage of different materials.  Here at G2 we don’t just go through the motions, we are elite.

Freshly Dirty – Cardboard Dreamboat

January 11, 2017 By Johnny Le

I got a chance to talk with the man behind Freshly Dirty, Alex Morton, about the beginnings, inspiration, and the new new of what to expect from this fresh new company.

How did y’all get your start?

So we started out last year in March taking a shot in the dark at making fixed axles, they were terrible in the beginning but we knew that we had to get something off the ground and begin building a fan base. That’s when Coffin Nachtmahr started supporting us! He actually has quite a few of those first fixed axles. After the first fixed axle design I started on the one that really got us going, which was The Traveller. Super simple in design, but with some good thought behind it and some good wood that we sourced here in Indiana. It just kept growing and we put a lot of time into the design and feel of what we wanted. At first I started alone then added my good friend Gerald Bass, everybody kept calling him ‘Lil Bass’ at worlds this year. Going to the World YoYo Contest was what really propelled us into building a team and really committing to this idea of a small yoyo company.

So Coffin, helped out with major moral support? cool cool. I’ve seen the Traveller in just pics and clips from Alex Curfman. You just woke up and wanted to try it? The supportive feel at contests (especially Worlds) will do that for sure.

It was my first Worlds event and I met and networked with so many people. OhYesYo is amazing, I shot and edited that grungy VHS video for them and then out of nowhere I received tons of OhYesYo guys and other throwers  that want to support Freshly Dirty.

At Worlds we grew into a full effort, Gerald Bass, Arthur Foley, Charlie Byers, and after worlds we didn’t even have a bearing design and I offered Alex Curfman to join the team, I was stoked when he wanted to join! Dude loves his fixies haha.

Truly a great beginning story of the freshly dirty underdogs. So how about the name? What inspired you to name it all “Freshly Dirty”?

Underdogs for sure, but we like where it’s going. Sticking to small run stuff right now and learning how to do this from the ground up is what we do! I would describe things as such, “Dude that jacket is so Fresh yet Dirty” “Freshly Dirty” was how I described my style/tricks Cool, but kinda dirty or sloppy. Definitely a work in progress always.

Right on, I feel you. good stuff. You wanted to do fixed axels, so what got y’all to make the jump to Cardboard Dreamboat?

During Worlds last year in Cleveland we started talking about doing something beyond our fixed axles. Arthur Foley goes to school at Georgia Tech and has all the CAD magic, over Skype and a lot of input from the Freshly Dirty family we started a prototype that had aspects of our favorite things in a yo-yo. It had a lot of silly names in the beginning. Left Turn, El Crusty Doro, Dust Bunny, but we all kinda just went with it and everyone liked the name of Cardboard Dreamboat.

One last thing, before I let you go, got any words for the community?

There will be more crazy names/colorways and content in general, also looking to expand the freshly dirty family this year. Keep it fresh, stay dirty. Gear, apparel, and future collab in the works 😉 forgot to mention that. Thanks Johnny!

Before we ended our conversation, Alex gifted mewith specs of their newest yoyo, the Cardboard Dreamboat:

Weight: 65.9 grams
Width: 43.6 mm
Diameter: 58.4 mm
Bearing: Size C (.250 x .500 x .187 in)
Response: 19mm Silicone Pads

This beauties drop on their website January 27th at 8pm EST.

First Look – The Standard by Core YoYo Co.

July 27, 2016 By Steve Brown

Core YoYo Co The Standard yoyo

I got a chance to play an early prototype of The Standard by Core YoYo Co. at US Nationals last year. It’s weird and cool and fun and plays really nice and plays like nothing else on the market. I’m very excited about all of those things! Check out full details from their press release below, and pick one up at the YoYoExpert booth at the 2016 World YoYo Contest!

Core Co. is happy to announce the official release of our first yoyo, The Standard. It will be available at the YoyoExpert booth during the World Yoyo Contest, August 3-6, 2016.

The Standard was designed based primarily around one idea, that a yoyo could have play that is independent of its shape. The Standard combines an aluminum “core” with acetal “shells” that are replaceable and interchangeable. The minimalist aluminum core allows for extremely efficient weight distribution, while the lightweight acetal shell is designed to be comfortable in hand. The result of this combination gives The Standard a completely unique feel. It is efficient, yet elegant. Comfortable yet performance oriented. Going forward, Core Co. will be introducing a variety of shells in different shapes, sizes and colors — all of which will be compatible with The Standard’s unique core.

Core YoYo Co. The Standard Specs:

Diameter: 56 mm
Width: 46 mm
Weight: 67 grams
Bearing: Size C centering
Response: 19mm slim pads
Material: Aluminum & Acetal plastic

First Look – YoYofficer Urban

June 22, 2016 By Steve Brown

YoYofficer Urban

Yoyofficer just sent us info on their newest model, the YoYofficer Urban. They’ve been doing a lot of great stuff lately, and the Urban looks like another fun release.

Our recent models focused on lighter feeling and agile play and we loved them for that. But sometimes it’s good to pick up something tougher, someting packing lot of punch and power. And for that, we bring you the new Yoyofficer Urban.

Don’t be fooled by its 66.1 g weight, Urban plays heavier and more stable than this number would suggest. The shape combines quite organic curves with open catch zone and above average width. Add balanced distribution of weight to this and you get a very versatile yo-yo. Relaxed play at bus stop, patient crafting of new tricks, or winning contests, Urban will fit in all of these roles.

Urban also represents small revolution in look of our yo-yos. Apart from 8 stunning splash finishes, it will utilize our brand new beadblasting. We worked long and hard to get beadblasting to this level and we believe we can offer you one of best surfaces on the market. It is really smooth, slightly more matte, and it feels simply amazing.

Yoyofficer Urban Specs:

Weight: 66.1 g
Diameter: 55 mm
Width: 46 mm
Gap Width: 4.6 mm
Surface: New higher quality blasting
Bearing: Size C centering bearing
MSRP: 49.9 USD

CLYW Announces Yeti 2.0

June 20, 2016 By Steve Brown

CLYW Yeti 2.0

CLYW has released photos, specs, and a pre-order for the new Yeti 2.0! The original Yeti was CLYW’s first foray into plastic yoyos, and while it was really unique it had a ton of production problems. All of these seem to have been sorted out and the design has been updated considerably. Check out the official release info, specs, and more pics below, and then head over to CLYW.ca to pre-order yours if you want it before it even hits stores.

The Yeti was the first plastic return top produced by CLYW. It was an ambitious project that didn’t quite meet its potential, and after some false starts and production problems it was put to bed.

But the idea didn’t die, and there were too many great things about the Yeti to just let it go. So CLYW owner Chris Mikulin went back to the drawing board, and with help from a new factory was able to create a better version of the plastic return top we all loved so much.

The new Yeti 2.0 features a larger diameter, slightly different proportions, a new bearing assembly system, a matte finish in the gap for easy grinds, and a more production-friendly plastic. These changes combined have turned a difficult project into a unique and high-quality plastic return top that we’re incredibly proud to offer.

Each Yeti comes with a sheet of spare pickaxe stickers so you can customize your return top.

CLYW Yeti 2.0 Specs:

Diameter – 63.4mm
Width – 46.2mm
Weight – 68 grams
Bearing – Size C centering bearing
Response – Snow Tires
