Here’s another “slice of life” video from the Czech Republic, giving us an idea of what it’s like to hang out at the Slusny shop on a sunny afternoon. The Czech yoyo scene is so damn solid! Thanks to Slusny for all the work they put in, and for sharing this video.
The Czech YoYo Association is hosting the 12th year of YoYo Camp! For one week, from July 27th to August 3rd, a few dozen yo-yoers will gather in a cabin reserved just for them. Located in Upper Misečky, near Spindleruv Mlyn, YoYo Camp is surrounded by the beautiful nature of a national park. It’s a week full of fun and relaxing with yoyoing, hiking, geocaching, disc golf, drinking and anything else you would like to do. There is nothing strictly organized but if you want you can just hang out around and yoyo for whole week. Sometime during week, there will be small yoyo contest, but nothing serious. It’s an awesome event and great experience!
Expats.cz posted a nice “outsider view” of the yoyo scene in Prague…definitely worth the read!
While yo-yos can typically be found in hobby shops alongside juggling pins and frisbees, it is incredibly rare, even in a major city, to find a store that exclusively sells yo-yos. Slusny and the Yo-Yo Store are not just Prague’s only brick-and-mortar yo-yo stores, but the only ones in Europe.
Located on either side of the Vlatva river, the shops are rivals—the Montagues and Capulets of yo-yo, but without the messy violence. Both stores opened up around the same time in 2010—first the Yo-Yo Store, and then four months later, the Slusny store. Also, both are sponsored by rival yo-yo manufacturers—the Yo-Yo store by Duncan, Slusny by YoYoFactory. “The kids take the rivalry more seriously than the owners,” says Hank Freeman, an American Yo-Yo champion living in the city. “It’s not like West Side Story, though.”

Videos are going up for the Slusny Junior Cup, and there’s a ton of fresh new talent in the Czech Republic! First and second place are up, and it looks like more videos are uploading now…keep an eye on their YouTube channel for more.
1st Place – Tony Šec
2nd Place – Michael Ďurčo
We tried to run the video description through Google Translate and ended up with this:
“30.4 rag held in Prague, where, of course, almost traditionally, lacked a decent stand. Could you take a Vashek curled, Robert Kucera, David Kreibich, Matthew Tomes and Petr Kavka. We showed a few exhibiček and learned some basic tricks.”
We’re not entirely sure what that means, but this video has great tricks, people having lots of fun, and we’re not sure but it looks like Vashek got married. Enjoy!
Monday was the grand opening of the new location of YoYoStore, one of the few dedicated yoyo shops in the world, owned and operated by Jan “Korda” Kordovsky. Players lined the streets waiting for the shop to open, and piled in to celebrate the new space. There was tons of video and photos from the event…congratulations to Korda and YoYoStore!

The whole office has been stoked on this, and once you get a chance to try it you’ll know why. Available in extremely limited quantities at EYYC. It will also be make its rounds for testing at PNWR and Cal States in the coming weeks. No confirmation that it will see general release at this time.
