Coleman Weimer just dropped his 2013 World YoYo Contest clip video, and it’s got a solid roundup of all the usual suspects….Petr Kavka, Eric Koloski, Ann Connolly, Michael Ferdico, Zach Gormley, Palli, Darnell Hairston, Ayumu Harada, Ky Zizan, and plenty more. Dig in and enjoy!
Our own Patrick Borgerding got a great write-up in his local paper, the Redondo Beach Reader. Excerpt of the article is below, as well as a link to the full piece. Congratulations, Patrick!
Patrick Borgerding took a deep breath to calm his nerves.
He knew what he was doing – he held, and still holds, the title of national yo-yo champion – but still his body was shaking. White stage lights blinded his vision.
He knew that beyond them sat a panel of 10 judges who would be meticulous in their evaluation of a three-minute routine he had been ardently practicing for months.
He also knew that beyond them was a jam-packed room of more than 2,000 spectators.
In the 12 months leading up to that moment, he had devoted more than 300 hours to yo-yo practice. The song he was using as a soundtrack for the routine he was about to perform had a play count of 1,400 on his iTunes
It was early August, and the 19-year-old Redondo Beach native was in Florida, standing onstage at the World Yo-Yo Contest. He knew that his final score depended on his ability to wow the audience – that’s why he had incorporated a number of “flashy tricks” – and his technical execution.
Borgerding launched into the routine that he had been fine-tuning and dreaming about for months. Three minutes later, the room rose in a standing ovation. He knew he had pulled it off.

The best thing about seeing Harrison Lee at a contest is seeing Harrison Lee at a contest. But the second best thing is knowing that a recap video will follow shortly!
2013 Canadian National Champion Harrison Lee brings us a quick recap video of Canadian Nationals featuring CLYW Chris, Charles Haycock, Ann Connolly, Daniel Dietz, and, most importantly, Yogi.

CLYW player Harrison Lee dropped a great 10-minute recap of the 2013 World YoYo Contest. It’s a fun video and there’s the usual this and that, but two things here are really what you want to see:
– 3:30 is the start of Wheel of Penalty footage, including Rafael Matsunaga’s Double Denim showing. This year’s Wheel of Penalty was easily the most chaotic and amazing, and it’s seriously one of the best parts of Worlds.
– 5:00 is the start of Pink Slips, where yoyo players battle each other in a one-trick format….and winner takes the losers yoyo. The real trick with this is using something cheap enough that you don’t mind losing it, but good enough to land your best tricks so you stand a chance of winning. Darnell Hairston left with five or six new yoyos.
Great video, Harrison…thank you!
Here’s our next video from the 2013 Alternative Freestyle Invitational…this one from Nate Sutter!
Nate’s smooth, flowy repeaters are some of the best-looking tricks out there. While he’s not usually a freestyle player, it’s great to see him on stage working through some of our favorite tricks.
The results are in for the 2A, 3A, and 4A Divisions….congratulations to our new World YoYo Champions!
2A World YoYo Champion – Takuma Yamamoto
3A World YoYo Champion – Hank Freeman
4A World YoYo Champion – Michael Nakamura
Finals for the 1A and 5A Divisions are tomorrow night, and we’ll have results here as soon as they are announced. Follow us on Instagram for pics and video of each division as they happen!
