This week’s Cabin Tutorial is “Bergy’s Got Slack”, performed by the slightly-constipated looking Charles Haycock. Charles is looking increasingly pained in these videos…I’m a little concerned for the dear boy. Maybe more fiber in his diet?
Rafael Matsunaga gives us a new twist on a Kohta Watanabe trick.
Jake Bullock points out that I used to be really salty about tech-heavy counterweight play.
Spencer Berry reminds us that he’s one of the guys responsible for what we consider modern 1A play with part of his destruction trilogy.
String folds and thumb mounts, string folds and thumb mounts. Why aren’t more people messing with these?
Darnell Hairston gets all emo on us with Abandoned.
Adam Brewster stops in for a guest spot with an “Arrested Development” reference.
I’m not done playing with this mount yet.
And Rafael gives us another reason to get back to playing frontstyle.
The folks over at Sweets Kendama are releasing a very small quantity of these VooDama Dolls…a handmade cross between a kendama and a voodoo doll. With the success of the Pill, I think we’re going to see a bit more experimenting from kendama manufacturers with different shapes and concepts like this. Granted the kendama is a perfect toy, refined after some 300+ years of existence….that that doesn’t mean it can’t still use a little tweaking now and again.
No word yet on release date or price, but keep an eye on the Sweets Kendamas site for more details.

We’ve gathered up some great yoyo news from around the web…check out some great press coverage for PNWR, Palli, and Black!
Some awesome hometown press for Palli from News of Iceland.
Anti-Yo‘s Sonny Patrick dug this video out of the vaults…and it’s great!
A video that Spencer Berry and I made in late summer 2008. Never got around to finishing it, so this is a rough cut. Filmed at La Copa Loca in San Francisco’s mission district. Yo-yos used are Anti-Yo Eetzilla and an early Ywet prototype. Song is “Bros” by Panda Bear.
Our friend Harper Reed is a yoyo player, juggler, performance judge for the Triple Crown of YoYo, and also just finished up as the Chief Technology Officer for President Obama’s reelection campaign. He spoke yesterday at the TED 2013 conference about technology and its role in the future of politics to crowd of some of the most brilliant minds in the world.
We spend a lot of time on YoYoNews talking about the little, wonderful things in our industry and community, but it’s worth noting that there are yoyo players operating on a MUCH larger scale. With Black’s hugely successful presentation at TED earlier, this makes two yoyo players in two days who’ve presented at TED, and that’s a huge impact on the world at large. We’re going to try and pin down Harper for an interview in the near future but in the meantime, here are some photos from his TED talk, and a great write-up on the TED blog. (photos via TED)
CLYW x One Drop are filming a documentary about the ridiculous speed at which they’ve conceived, designed, prototyped, and produced their new collaboration yoyo, the Summit. CLYW team member Charles Haycock is handling the filming/editing duties, and they’ve released this trailer to get us ready for the project. The Summit will be available this weekend at the California State YoYo Contest, and the retail price has been announced as $115, with a limit of one per person.
YoYo.sk posted this slow-motion clip video from EYYC 2013, and it’s great! Sometimes we’re so concerned about speed and accuracy and points that we forget about the shapes we’re making & destroying with our tricks. When you slow down some of these tricks, it gives us a chance to better appreciate just what we’re looking at. The video is a bit grainy, but the talent is undeniable.
The Kengarden dropped this great video featuring their all new patented Kendama Cam 5000! Ok, so it’s neither patented nor does it have a “5000” anywhere in the name…but it should. It totally should.
We just got something really fantastic from Chris at CLYW…process pictures of the box and engraving art for the Summit! The super talented Jason Week rocked this artwork out in record time, to match the amazing pace that One Drop and CLYW set with the development, design, and production of this new collaborative design. We always love getting to see the process behind something like this, and thought you’d enjoy it, too.
