2014 Summer Freestyle Competition (Poland)

September 12, 2014 By Ben Gates

A few weeks back, on August 23rd, Ky Zizan and I had the unexpected honor of attending the 2014 Summer Freestyle Competition in Jarocin, Poland.

When we arrived in Berlin on Friday night, Pac informed us that there was a contest the following day, 4 hours away in Poland. We weren’t planning to go at first, taking a train to catch a bus to catch another bus would have been fairly inconvenient. But then Pac’s (non-yoyoing) friend Toby showed up with his RV. As fate would have it, Toby is going to have his driver’s license revoked by the German government very soon, so he was eager to drive as much as possible while he still can.

Around noon on Saturday, as Pac, Gesine, Toby, Ky, and myself loaded in the RV to leave Berlin, Pac called up Nowak (SFC oragnizer) to let him know we were actually coming. The contest was scheduled to begin at 2pm, but when Pac told him that we would arrive around 4pm, Nowak said “Ok, we’ll start when you get here.” We were pretty stunned. I guess I’ve never been an international guest at a yoyo contest like this before, but still, stalling the entire event for us to get there, was an awesome gesture. It was around this point, as the RV turned onto the Autobahn, it really began to sink in that this would be an event unlike anything I’ve ever been to before.

When we arrived in Jarocin, Pac found out that he would be judging (though he had considered doing a routine), and I found out that they needed someone to film the freestyles. Good thing we decided to go!

2014 Summer Freestyle Competition (Poland)

It was a quaint little contest, only about 20 competitors, and a non-standard judging system (string hits only), with some players doing multiple styles in their routines, all in a single division. It was very much a low-pressure opportunity for the local players to get stage experience. Despite the relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere, we witnessed some great rising talent, and these guys have a lot to look forward to at Polish Nationals later this month.

I never would have thought to find myself in an RV, going to a yoyo contest in a foreign country on a moment’s notice. Nor did I ever expect I would attend a yoyo contest on a Polish farm with goats and go-karts, ponies, pedal-boats (in a lake on the premises), and communal dinner cooked on an open fire. It was an awesome weekend, and we couldn’t have planned it if we had known about the contest beforehand. Many thanks to Toby for transportation, and of course thanks to our Polish friends for waiting for us!

North East Regional YoYo Contest Official Videos and More!

June 15, 2014 By Ben Gates

All of the official Finals and Sports 1A videos from the North East Regionals (Z-Games) last weekend are now online here: 1A 2A 3A 4A 5A

This year we tried out a new multi-camera filming setup, and despite an exciting variety of equipment issues, the Top 10 of 1A are presented in this exclusive new configuration. This is the first time I’ve ever seen multiple camera angles edited together for an American contest, and these videos turned out pretty awesome.

And here are a few moments aside from the winning routines that are worth checking out:

Air YoYoing Freestyles

Players compete with imaginary yo-yos to win a YoYofficer Aura. With demos by judges Paul Dang and Graeme Steller, and competitors David Kane, Anthony Federici, Gabe Carter-Weidenfeld, and Hudson Wright.

The Blindfolded Legends Sports Ladder

Hosted by Graeme Steller, yo-yoing legends Daniel Dietz, Eric Koloski, Jeff Coons, Mark Montgomery, and Paul Dang perform classic 1A Sport Ladder tricks, without using their eyes!

John Wolfe does awesome 5A juggling, also crazy Rei-Dragon (dual-string 5A) tricks in his 3rd place routine.

And congratulations to Adam Lord for earning the Brett Outchcunis award, in recognition for his efforts to encourage and support the yoyo community. Adam is a Yomega Ambassador and also responsible for organizing the NH State YoYo Contest, which is coming up soon on June 21st.

Air YoYoing @ MA States 2014

May 9, 2014 By Ben Gates

This year at MA States, amid the usual mid-contest raffle-off giveaways and stalling shenanigans, a new event was introduced: Air Yo-Yoing Freestyles.

Hosted by Ooch, the competitors were Evan, Jason, and YoYoNews’ own Ed Haponik, with judges Eric Koloski and Ethan Bein.

Similar to Air Guitar, this awkward freestyle showcase required competitors to do their routines without their yo-yos, and the results were hilarious:

In the end, Evan came out on top and won a YoYofficer Eager. We knew he had it from the moment he checked his imaginary string tension.

But that didn’t stop Ed from trying to sway the judges, busting out the craziest invisible yo-yo trick that shouldn’t be possible (except Shu Takada just did it).

Throwback Thursday: 1970’s Duncan Yo-yolympics

March 20, 2014 By Ben Gates

For Throwback Thursday, check out this hilarious old promotional footage that Duncan Toys produced in the 70’s.

The first four minutes are a yo-yo “history & science lesson” presented by Doug Behringer, who was the Promotions Director for Duncan during this era. Scratch your head while he explains how yo-yos are powered by the sun.

“What do you think would happen to a yo-yo in outer space? Without gravity, do you think it would spin forever?” I wish I could make this stuff up!

Also notice: towards the end of the bit, Doug explains that it’s called “playing yo-yo” rather than “playing with the yo-yo.” I’d reckon that the term “yo-yoing” hadn’t been coined yet. Crazy stuff.

The latter ten minutes of the film is an extraordinary glimpse at yo-yo contests of yesteryear – “How to Run a Yo-Yo Olympic Contest.” This was filmed in 1979 at Six Flags over Georgia, and distributed to parks and recreational departments across the country in preparation for this nationwide event orchestrated by Duncan Toys. According to the video, the Duncan Yo-Yo Olympics was open to all boys and girls under 16 years of age. Divisions were segregated between the sexes, and also either over or under 12 years old.

Contests seeded from the Playground level to the City Contests, followed by State Contests, and onto one of 9 Regionals. Finally the top 9 in the country were flown to Nationals at the Marriott Great America, in Illinois. The prize for a Gold medal at Nationals was a $1000 Scholarship Bond.

Duncan had certified demonstrators in every region of the country mobilize to sell yo-yos, teach tricks, and judge these competitions locally. In Atlanta, the regional demonstrator at this contest was Lance Lynch from Pensacola, Florida. With that fantastic mustache, watch in the film as Lance rounds the kids up in a line for the contest. Unlike modern freestyle based competitions, this primitive yo-yo contest format is very similar to how Kendama ladders are organized today. As Lance moves down the line of kids with a clipboard, everybody steps out from the line one at a time to attempt each trick. Here, everyone starts off with 100 points, and loses 2 points for each miss. It’s basically a sport ladder where the competitors move up the rungs in a group.

Here are the old trick lists:

Playground Level:

-Gravity Pull

-The Spinner

-Walk the Dog

-Around the World

City Level:

-Lunar Loops

-Astro Loops

-Planet Hops

-Orbit Launch

-Rock the Baby

State / Regional Level:

-Skyrocket

-Man on the Flying Trapeeze

-Tidal Wave

-Warp Drive

-Flying Saucer

-Braintwister

-Shooting Star

-Double or Nothing

-Gemini Loops
