Bryan Jardin – What’s Your Setup?

October 21, 2019 By Steve Brown

Today we catch up with Bryan Jardin – Marketing Specialist for Duncan Toys and 7-time Philippine National YoYo Champion!

What are you throwing?

Barracuda X and Yoshicuda X. They’re just so powerful! The spin-time is what I needed for both 1A and 5A. Barracuda X is for 1A: it’s light and I can easily control it. Yoshicuda X for 5A: As I grow old, I’m liking undersized yo-yos for 5A. Both share the same shape, but the dimension and weight are perfectly designed on each discipline.

What response are you using?

Default Red Duncan Pads. Not available for retail stores yet, but coming soon. It makes my yo-yo snappy…I kinda like old school feeling when I throw. I want my yo-yos to bind easily without thinking I have a knot, you know what I mean? I’m picky, I also change these depending on how many hours I play. But if it doesn’t bind the way I wanted to, I change both sides.

What bearing are you using?

Dif-E-Yo Konkave for more than a decade now. Everday carry, I don’t worry much about it. As long as it binds and the bearing is working, I’m all good. Contest season is a different story. If I’m serious about winning, I have a different formula. I break bearings because I throw so hard. I tried cleaning it in different ways for many years, then I got tired. So I change bearing if I feel like it doesn’t spin the way I wanted to. I don’t throw out the bad ones, I just switch them to my EDC.

What string are you using?

Kitty Fat – it’s fat, and tension is consistent. I also like the economical price string. I change strings frequently. When I’m practicing for a contest, I change strings every after 2 freestyle practice. Since I throw hard, I stretch the string so fast. I don’t throw them out, I just set them aside and then use them in my everyday carry yo-yos.

5A May Interview – Bryan Jardin

May 31, 2014 By Drew Tetz

Hot on the heels of his recent 5A May Torque video, Filipino wonderboy Bryan Jardin has agreed to answer a few questions about his 5A philosophy and yo-yo experience. With multiple championships under his belt at both Philippine Nationals & the Asian Pacific Yo-yo contest, he has already proven himself to be a formidable force on the Asian competitive scene, and a podium finish at the Bay Area Classic suggests that he has not slowed down upon moving to the US. In addition to being a great player, Bryan is well-known for his energetic off-stage antics and his huge smile. Pull up a chair and learn a little about the man behind the tricks.

How did you get started in yo-yoing?

I started yo-yoing when I was 9 years old, around the time that the Super Yo-yo scene crashed in the Philippines. Everyone had a yoyo. To make the long story short, Edmund San Antonio ( Duncan Crew Philippines ) introduced me to the advanced tricks, and I thought it was the coolest thing that I’d seen in my whole life. So he made me buy a ball bearing yoyo. I learned the tricks really quick because I’m into it. I tried competing for Basic, Intermediate and Advance- freestyle but I ended up losing. But I don’t care, I had fun! . Yoyoing helps me to build my confidence in the outside world, I’ve met a lot of friends and learned a lot of things in life.

Who are some of your favorite players & biggest influences?

Many of my favorite yo-yo players are old school players. Steve Brown, Rafael Matsunaga, Kohta, Yuuki Spencer, Sebby, Paul Escolar, Gary Longoria and Spencer Berry. I still look up to them.

For new rising star yoyo players, I like Michael Kurti, Isaac Sams, Andrew Maider, and Janos Karancz,

3. How do you generally create your tricks & combos?

I usually use 1A mounts for my 5A combos. I’ll create a lot of mini-tricks and put them together, I always make sure that the flow is right and I don’t usually care about technical. If I can’t come up with new tricks, I look back to the old 5A tricks, but I’ll add more style and put it in a competitive way.

4. You’re known in the community for your high energy both on and off the stage. What was the most fun you’ve ever had at a yo-yo contest?

Hahaha! This always happens, so I’m kind of used to it… After Sean Perez’s Freestyle, people will congratulate me because they think that I’m Sean. One time, a kid ran up wanting to hug me, take a picture and get my signature. I find it so funny because I always hang out with him and we both have the same Duncan Shirts. Brothers!!

5. You’re doing a great job showing off yo-yoing for Duncan at Downtown Disney. Is it more fun to perform for non-players who are impressed by everything or yoyoers who appreciate the technical difficulty of what you do?

For Non-players, I rarely do competition/technical/difficult tricks for them because even though it looks good, they don’t really understand it. Haha! One thing I like for the non-player crowd is to teach them tricks, I find it more fun and exciting.

I really like showing my tricks to yoyoers because at least they can understand the difficulty, style, flow and smoothness of my tricks. And if they like it, it gives me more hope to create new tricks!

6. What’s your favorite 5A trick of all time, and why?

My favorite 5A tricks are body tricks and aerials, because my definition of 5A is the counterweight/string/yoyo is away from me. I like it when I can add aerial moves and move the yoyo around my body.

7. You recently placed at BAC and have a history of strong performances at AP. How are American contests different from contests in Asia?

I’ve been competing in Asia for years and years, so I do tricks that fit to Asian Contests, which is more speed+technical. Here in the US, they focus more on style+flow+technical, which I find way easier to compete in, and I feel that this is were I belong when it comes to contest. I mostly like American 5A players because I can see the tricks whenever they freestyle, it’s much clearer. I really do appreciate a routine with good flow and not so fast. In my opinion, fast tricks are too robotic, especially for 5A.

8. What’s your favorite nickname for Brandon Jackson?

Haha! Before I answer this question, I would like to describe him. Brandon is Impossible. I think he is a walking Google, he knows everything! Brandon is a really good higher up and a friend… I always call him boss, because he is actually my boss! But I really want to call him BJ, Because we have the same acronym, I’m BJ too!

9. How do you plan your freestyles?

I plan my freestyle first before picking a song. I divide my freestyle into three pieces. It’ll help me to compress my freestyle so I can put more tricks in. It’s a little bit risky because I ended up putting a lot of tricks, and I don’t have spare time if I make a mistake. But that’s how I roll, I’ll go big or go home.

10. What do you think is going to be the biggest yo-yo trend of 2015?

I 2015 will be the battle of young yoyo players, they’re so crazy and innovative. I think kids will dominate the big stages in 2015. Old yoyo players will be history.

Any closing bits of advice?

For the kids out there dreaming of becoming a sponsored player:

  1. Be yourself
  2. Know your roots
  3. Be a role model to others
  4. Be creative and Innovative
  5. Be friendly, don’t act like a superstar
  6. Be active in contests
  7. Original Tricks are always the best tricks
  8. Enjoy what you do

Once you’ve learn how to do these things, companies will find you!

How To YoYo On TV w/ Bryan Jardin

December 20, 2012 By Steve Brown

Bryan Jardin, the 2012 Asia-Pacific Champion in the counterweight division, just popped up on Hero TV, a cable channel based in Quezon City, Philippines. It’s a great appearance for a yo-yo player (8 minutes long!) and also VERY instructive for any player out there who wants to be on TV for their yoyoing. A few things to note:

1. They flashed his titles across the screen, and managed to turn his 7th Place finish at the World YoYo Contest (a big deal) into 7th Place National Champion of Florida. If you’re a yoyo player and you’re on TV, they are either going to screw up whatever you give them, or they’re going to ignore it and call you a World Champion. Just be ready to smile and nod and be totally fine with whatever they make up.

2. The hosts of a majority of the programs that are willing to book a yoyo player are generally going to be of the loud & wacky variety. Look at that guy’s hat! They are going to exaggerate everything and go out of their way to act loud and wacky. DO NOT try to match them. These people are loud and wacky for a living, and if you try to match their volume it’s going to look awkward. Bryan did a great job of being dignified and reserved, and that gives him a degree of gravity unmatched by that woman’s shorts. It makes him look like the calm in the eye of the storm, and as a result he stands out way more and in a positive way.

3. Keep your tricks simple, and stick with single tricks. What Bryan did was give them individual tricks, with names, that featured a specific and singular movement. Too many players get on TV and just start talking and playing, and the host inevitably asks for the name of the trick and they mumble “It’s, uh, well, it doesn’t have a name really” and it’s super hard for an audience to relate to that and latch on to it. If you’re showing something to people that they’ve never seen before, you need to package and label it for easy consumption so that they can process the information better. Otherwise, it’s just “Did you see that one swingy thing that he did that was like a swingy thing?” and they will automatically assume that it’s completely beyond their reach to even try. Keep it accessible…demonstrate mastery without making it look beyond the reach of the average person.

Bryan did a fantastic job with this interview, and it’s a great reference point for any of you who might need to be on TV to promote your sponsor or a contest or your local club.

2014 IYYC – Molnar vs Jardin

July 22, 2014 By Steve Brown

Duncan International YoYo Championship IYYC

Duncan’s International YoYo Championship is just around the corner, and they’ve announced an incredible roster of talent that they are flying in to compete in their event! Some of the top players from around the world are being flown to Orlando to compete against each other for more than $17,000 in cash prizes! Who will come out on top? We’ll be taking a look at some of the players Duncan has invited, and we want to know: who do YOU think is going to win?
Our second match-up: David Molnar vs. Bryan Jardin!

MolnarVsJardin

David Molnar is a 2x European 5A Champion, 2x Hungarian 5A Champion, and has racked up contest wins in the 5A division in Italy, the Czech Republic, and the UK. He’s an absolute powerhouse of a player, and also has a slew of titles and Top 3 finishes in the 1A, 3A, and 4A divisions all across Europe. Sponsored by C3YoYoDesign with a new signature yoyo, the Dymension, David is a force to be reckoned with in multiple divisions and if he’s on his game he could come away with a crazy amount of prize money from the International YoYo Championship.

Bryan Jardin is a 5x Philippines 5A Champion, and a 2x winner of the 5A division at the highly competitive Asia Pacific YoYo Championship. One of Duncan’s true star players, Bryan’s counterweight play is fast, smooth, stylish, and he has one tremendous advantage over David: the IYYC event is in Florida, and that weather (even for an indoor event) has been known to wreak havoc on players and their equipment. Bryan has the home-field advantage here, and won’t be suffering from the jet lag that David will be fighting at the event.

Who do you think will place higher in the 5A division at the 2014 International YoYo Championship…David Molnar or Bryan Jardin? Cast your vote below!

2016 Philippine National YoYo Contest Results & Video

September 14, 2016 By Steve Brown

2016 Philippine National YoYo Contest Results & Video

The 2016 Philippine National YoYo Contest just happened, and if you have any love for the history of yoyoing then this event holds a special place in your heart. Plus, you know, tons of talent and kick-ass players. Check out a great write-up of the contest by Kyle Capiral, and video of the winners below!

2016 marked the 12th Philippine National YoYo Contest. The National Contest was held last September 10 and 11, 2016 at SM City Marikina, home to some of the best players in the Philippines. Around 50 players joined the contest and battled it out for the Preliminaries on the 1st day. 31 players played their best on the 2nd day for the Finals which was joined by seeded players Johan Baylosis from Dumaguete and Meejay Olaybar from Manila who won the 2016 Visayas Regional YoYo Contest for 1A and X-Division (with 5A) respectively.

3A saw John Eric Galicha winning his 3rd National title with a clean and technical packed freestyle. Michael Ayuyao followed on 2nd with some basic 3A stuff while John Hernandez tried his best to keep up for 3A finishing 3rd.

Kyle Capiral won 2A again grabbing his 9th National title in consecutive years, followed by Kenneth Santiago on 2nd place with a clean freestyle and various looping tricks. Attempting some risky around the world tricks, Martin Desamito finished in 3rd place.

4A saw a new champion as former champion Sean Perez is back in the USA and 4A powerhouse player Rocky Loyola left for New Zealand. Hailing from Cavite, Macky Profeta blazed the crowd with an energetic and technical freestyle wowing the crowd and the judges (which could easily be dubbed as the Freestyle of the Day). Macky was crowned as the new 4A National Champion, followed by MagicYoYo’s Jaued Cervas who showed his versatility in other styles placing 2nd in 4A, while Jake Marcelo finished 3rd with a clean and classy routine which felt like a cool breeze of air.

5A and 1A became the most contested divisions for the year as new generation players showed great competition for the senior players of the Philippines.

5A had a surprising turnout of events as former 5A champion Jaued Cervas fell out of the podium. YoYofficer’s Paolo Alto showed great variety of bouncing counterweight partnered with an entertaining and smooth freestyle placing him in 3rd. Miggy Hizon of BlkSens placed his highest finish to date at 2nd place with a unique combination of tricks and amazing flow. Gaining back his title and grabbing his 7th National Title for 5A is Bryan Jardin of Duncan Toys. Bryan showed what it’s like to be a top world class player and gave 5A players a run for their money with technicality and banger tricks!

Finally, 1A saw the highest level of competition from all the past years. Majority of new generation players dropped out the senior players and made it through the finals.

Placing 3rd in 1A is first time National competitor Kyle Toribio from Davao who showed technical stuff with cleanliness and difficulty. Consistent 1A finalist, Matthew Garcia had his first podium finish placing 2nd with his smooth freestyle showing top class tricks and variety of hops, whips and lacerations. Reymark Zavalla gained his 5th National 1A Title through a technically-packed and overall entertaining and well-planned performance.

The PNYYC 2016 saw the most exciting players to date and we can’t wait to see what players can offer for the next contests!
