Hiroyuki Suzuki Launches Freshthings Brand

October 21, 2016 By Steve Brown

14671236_1143890619032338_3615412176074617841_n

4x World YoYo Champion Hiroyuki Suzuki has announced that he’s launching a new brand called “Freshthings”, and the first delivery of releases looks pretty amazing.

14732374_1143890592365674_4357911257725340296_n

First up is a plastic yoyo that echoes his typical design sensibilities, but is stock responsive and is a collaboration with Fragment Design, which means Hiroyuki is working with legendary streetwear designer Hiroshi Fujiwara! That’s pretty huge, and is the biggest fashion/yoyo design collaboration since Duncan produced yoyos for Lady Gaga’s pop-up store at Barney’s.

(Honorable mention to Self Edge for putting a yoyo on the leather patch of their collaboration with The Flat Head.)

14732324_1143890599032340_6136621412374713701_n

Included in the first delivery it looks like we’ll also have a licensed collaboration with Coca-Cola, with two different designs: one featuring a Japanese logo and the other featuring a classic logo that appears to be from the 1980s. Both look pretty cool, and while neither is as exciting as the Fragment collaboration, it’s still pretty great to see Coke logos on a good playing yoyo…something we haven’t had since Russell Promotions stopped working with them in the late 90s.

No word yet on pricing or availability, but Freshthings will officially launch on November 2nd, 2016. We’ll update with more info when we have it!

Hiroyuki Suzuki – Guinness World Record Classics

May 22, 2015 By Steve Brown

The Guinness World Record channel on YouTube just posted this “classic” clip, of 4-time World YoYo Champion Hiroyuki Suzuki setting the original Guinness World Record for knocking coins off people’s ears with a yoyo. Nice to see a clip like this archived for posterity!

The first record was set by John & Rebecca Higby in Spain on the Guiness World Record show. This clip shows Hiroyuki beating that time. Then in 2013, John Higby set a new record with TWO yoyos, live on television in Beijing. (Thanks to John Higby for the clarification!)

Hiroyuki Suzuki’s Top 10 Routines of All Time

May 24, 2014 By Patrick Borgerding

Hiroyuki Suzuki is the most well known modern yo-yoer. He has also had the longest career in high level competitive yo-yoing, managing to stay within the top 10 in the World for an incredible 13 years. During his tenure, Hiroyuki has collected 9 Regional titles, 6 National Titles, 7 Asia Titles, and 4 World Titles. En route to winning these titles, Hiroyuki has proven himself to be the best performer in all of yo-yo. Here we will take a look at his top 10 routines over the years.

Before we start, we will only be ranking unique routines. For example, 2012 JN and 2012 AP use the same routine; we will only rank the better of the two.

10. 2013 Asia Pacific – 3rd Place

In this routine, Hiroyuki brings to the table a very different vibe from his past routines.

9. 2006 Central Japan – 1st Place

Classic old school Hiroyuki.

8. 2014 West Japan – 2nd Place

Hiroyuki’s first outing in the 2014 circuit was very refreshing. Fantastic synchronization with the music, and a departure from the heavy dub-step of the past few years.

7. 2008 World Yo-Yo Contest – 2nd Place

The first World performance to feature the now iconic sunglasses, Hiroyuki brought a timeless routine in 2008.

6. 2012 World Yo-Yo Contest – 1st Place

8 years after winning his first World title, Hiroyuki reclaimed the title in 2012. Although with his restart, it is the weakest of his 4 World title routines.

5. 2010 Japan National Yo-Yo Contest -1st Place

Despite a restart and a change out, Hiroyuki managed to win the National title. The routine is exceptionally clean, despite the major deducts; so clean, in fact, you will forget about the restart/switch out all together. Along with the beautiful choreography, this has to be considered Hiroyuki at his best.

4. 2006 World Yo-Yo Contest -1st Place

In 2006, Hiroyuki completed the 3 peat. He hits most of his major music cues, as well as his big bangers. He also introduces plenty of new concepts in this routine. This routine is very close to topping his routine from 2005, but not quite.

3. 2005 World Yo-Yo Contest -1st Place

The most viewed routine of all time–and it comes as no surprise. This routine is vintage Hiroyuki. As always, perfect choreography, speed, accuracy, and extremely innovative tricks. This is Hiroyuki’s best routine of his 4 World titles.

2. 2012 Japan National Yo-Yo Contest -1st Place

Hiroyuki has dominated Japan National’s many times, but in 2012 he put on an unbelievable performance that more than just dominated. Extremely high risk tricks, incredible choreography, and the new-school swagger that Hiroyuki brings every time.

1. 2004 Japan National Yo-Yo Contest -1st Place

High energy, perfect music use, incredibly difficult tricks, and all the while going near flawless. Treat yourself to a classic:

Honorable Mention:

EYYC Demo

Not technically a competitive routine, but an incredibly entertaining performance nonetheless.

So, what do you think?  Which is your favorite routine from Hiroyuki?

Hiroyuki Suzuki in Paris 2014 – Something New

April 14, 2014 By Steve Brown

Four-time World Champion Hiroyuki Suzuki shows off “sOMEThING New” from Paris in this new video. Remember last year at the 2013 World YoYo Contest when we gave you a peek at a new prototype that Hiroyuki-san had with him?

Looks like it’s finally coming in to production! We still don’t have much in the way of details, but Hiroyuki-san hashtagged it with #titanium and #stainless so it looks like this is definitely going to be another premium item.

Ahmad Kharisma beats Christopher Chia and Hiroyuki Suzuki to claim the AP 2013 title!

July 14, 2013 By Rafael Matsunaga

Ahmad Kharisma, from Indonesia, is the 2013 Asia Pacific champion! He’s no stranger  to this and other international contests in Asia, but beating the only previous champions of the contest is no small feat! Hiroyuki Suzuki has no less than seven AP titles, the only one he had not won so far was the 2011 title, when Christopher Chia won.

In 2A, the young Japanese talent Ginji Miura had no trouble beating Shaqler’s Atsushi Yamada to take first place. Last year’s winner, Shunsuke Kawakami ended up in sixth place.

3A and 5A, however, saw last year’s champions return to the top. Wong Chak Wing, from China, beat Taiichiro Higashi, from Japan by almost twenty points for a clear 3A win, while Bryan Jardin, from the Philippines, had a slightly tougher time retaining his 5A title beating Denny Ko, from Hong Kong and Iskandar Shah, from Singapore by just over ten points.

Finally, in 4A, former World Champion Tsubasa Onishi finished first to claim his second AP title. Coming in second place was the contest’s pleasant surprise, Thailand’s Pornpinit Sanprasert, finishing ahead of Korean champion Jeon Ji-Hwan and the always spectacular Sean Perez!
