PLAY

The Gnarwhal 2 is an indefectible example of the play benefits of a mid-size yoyo…all the stability of a full-size model and the speed and liveliness of an undersized throw. Mid-sized yoyos are something of an anomaly in the yoyo industry; never as fashionable as full-size yoyos for competitors, and not as economical as most undersized throws. They’re arduous to execute well, but as you’d expect CLYW has done an prodigious job with the Gnarwhal 2. It functions every bit as thoroughly as the rest of their wares, while coming in just a bit smaller, lighter, and faster than the rest of their models. The Gnarwhal 2 traverses through tricks with alacrity, leaves plenty of room for even the most complicated of mounts, and moves faster than most players can probably regulate. The speed of the yoyo is probably its only downfall, as many players lack the mastery to be able to reign in a yoyo that moves this expeditiously.

LOOKS

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Surface Finish:” rating=”5/5″ group=”s1″ ] [xrr label=”Packaging:” rating=”3/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Branding:” rating=”4/5″ group=”s1″] [xrr label=”Artwork:” rating=”5/5″ group=”s1][/xrrgroup]

Beautifully machined and finished, the Gnarwhal 2 is right at home in the CLYW lineup. Our review model is the “Concrete Blizzard” color way, which is an admirable anodization scheme that looks marvelous either still or spinning. The Gnarwhal 2 arrives in CLYW’s quintessential stamped brown box, featuring revised Gnarwhal artwork by the incomparable Jason Week. CLYW’s branding is uncomplicated, sincere, and leaves a lasting impression…which is everything that branding should be. The architecture of the yoyo is an appealing refinement of the original Gnarwhal that looks as comfortable and appealing as it feels. CLYW yoyos are not elaborate, and rarely feature engraving of any kind but this feeds directly into their brand aesthetic and it fits superbly.

VALUE

[xrrgroup][xrr label=”Price:” rating=”4/5″ group=”s1″ ][/xrrgroup]

At $135 retail, the Gnarwhal 2 is an exceptional yoyo at a premium price. Not a casual purchase, but if you’re a dedicated player then it’s hard to refute the value once this yoyo is in your hand. For a well-designed machine whose capabilities will surely exceed your own skill, the price is most reasonable.

Oxygene Presents Gokten Uzuner

January 21, 2014 By Steve Brown

We don’t see or hear much from Oxygene these days, so it’s kind of exciting to get a video from them. Even better that Gokten Uzuner is a pretty good yoyo player with a fun and playful style. Enjoy!

Yoyo used is the Oxygene IO.
