Triple Crown of YoYo 2013 / 2014 Announcement

April 8, 2013 By Steve Brown

Triple Crown of YoYo

Hey everyone!

We regret to announce that we will not be holding a Triple Crown of YoYo event in 2013. But it’s all good…we’ve just chosen to take the year off to allow Triple Crown organizer André Boulay and his wife Devon to concentrate on the birth of their first child, who is due right when the contest would have been held. Congratulations, you two!

Without André, the quality just wouldn’t have been as high as it should be and one thing we absolutely insist with the Triple Crown of YoYo is bringing you the highest quality event possible. So we’re passing on 2013, and immediately beginning work on the 2014 event!

And we’ve confirmed a new venue for Chicago 2014…the event will be held at Navy Pier!

Historic Navy Pier® is Chicago’s lakefront playground. And it’s the Midwest’s #1 tourist and leisure destination, attracting more than 8.6 million visitors a year. Navy Pier is the place where all of Chicagoland and tourists from around the world have come together since 1995 to enjoy the beauty and the thrills of a day on Lake Michigan. From rides to restaurants, exhibitions to entertainment, shopping to dining cruises and tour boats, Navy Pier has it all – in a location unlike any other!

We’ll update with a firm event date soon, and will be opening early registration at the end of the year. Thanks so much for your continued support…and enjoy the rest of the summer contest season!

Mugen Kendama Are Returning!

April 8, 2013 By Erik Thatcher

Mugen kendama carry a legendary status in the kendama world and after a 5-year hiatus, they are finally returning!

From a Facebook post by Iwata-san:

私の中でいろいろな格闘がありましたが、私の背中を押してくれた Global kendama Network (GLOKEN) の窪田さん
温かいメッセージをいただいた海外のけん玉プレイヤーの皆さん
国内で熱く復活を願っている方々のおかげで、復活することを決心することができました。心から感謝しています!!!

Translated:

After a major struggle with my inner self, I have made up my mind to come back to the Kendama world. Many thanks to Mr. Kubota of GLOKEN who has given me a strong supportive push, avid overseas Kendama players who have sent me warm messages and passionate domestic fans who have been hoping to see Mugen products again.Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

History of Mugen Kendama

Crafted in Hiroshima by Iwata Mokko, a maker of traditional Japanese calligraphy brushes, original Mugen were available in colors that were outside of the standard offerings from other JKA manufacturers at the time. The paint is sticky, but not so much that it hinders the sliding motion of kensaki suberi, or makes toudai too easy for beginners. The ken was superbly balanced, the grain was beautiful, and most were sold along side of other JKA kendamas for about the same price.

Kazuma Iwata, son of the owner Iwata Mokko, stopped production in 2008 due to patent disputes with the JKA. A 2005 Japanese patent and a design patent held by the JKA prevented Iwata Mokko from making Mugens without a JKA license, and even the stickerless Mugen Kotobukis could not be made without the JKA’s permission. Since production ended, Mugen prices have skyrocketed. Depending on the color, prices are ~$300-$550 to find original Mugen still new in the package. Even loose tamas were selling for up to $160 each.

Players and collectors have been asking Iwata-san for a return to production since it stopped. There have been fan pages put up on Facebook and video contests asking why people think Mugen should re-start production.

Return of Mugen Kendama

This morning, Kubota-san of GLOKEN posted the above video confirming the return of Mugen to the kendama world. It’s been stated that these will not be the same kendamas produced before, but will be completely new and redesigned. So far, there is no mention if Iwata-san will submit these for JKA approval, or if the original Mugen colors will return or be replaced by new colors. While details are still scarce one thing is for sure…we’re getting new Mugen kendama and they’ll be amazing.

Direct from Gloken:

It has been confirmed, Kazuma Iwata has decided to resume making kendamas. Kazuma said that he was thankful to all of you, who gave the warm and exciting video messages or purchased Mugen Tamas. Thanks to your support, we have come at the starting line.

Thank you for everything you did for bringing Mugen back. We are no longer the dreamers.New Mugen will be come back as the totally upgraded model, developed jointly with GLOKEN.Kazuma has already started making a prototype of new Mugen.
We will make all the arrangements to supply the finest kendamas in the near future.

Please wait and see the next announcement.※The details will be provided later on GLOKEN’s web site, http://www.gloken.net. For further information, feel free to contact us. Please note that neither Kazuma nor Iwata wood factory answers to any inquiries about this matter.Do Something Kendaful !

Taro Komari – Against Method

April 8, 2013 By Steve Brown

Taro Komari gives us some great new material in his new video, “Against Method”. I’m personally a huge fan of videos that focus on variations on a theme, and wish more players would take the time to explore single concepts to their full conclusion. A great minute-and-a-half here, and worth watching a few times to get inspired.

Ultra Casj – Yuji Kelly & Anthony Tunstall

April 8, 2013 By Steve Brown

Yuji Kelly and Anthony Tunstall are so damn good.

Every bit of this video is smooth and effortless, the tricks are clean, and they’re both throwing the YYF x TP Proton, which is quickly becoming one of my favorites of the YoYoFactory Champions Collection. I don’t think I could love this video any more if it paid me money every time I watched it.

C3YoYoDesign Presents – “The Glitter” by Dávid Molnár

April 8, 2013 By Steve Brown

C3YoYoDesign’s Dávid Molnár is one of the best and most consistent players in Europe…at any given moment you can count on whatever he’s doing to be pretty cool. In this new video he’s showing off the C3YoYoDesign Glitter, and making it look pretty damn good. The horizontal combo starting at 1:31 is one of the smoothest and prettiest I’ve seen lately, and that slack combo at the end of the video is beautifully done. Great work, Dávid!

Spencer Berry reminds us that if you like a trick, do it twice.

Not sure what’s better about this trick…finding a weird 1A wrist wrap, or the still frame that came out of the initial mount.

Get out of the basement, Darnell.

I have no idea how I came up with this. Sorry, no backstory.

Ladies and gentleman, Colin Beckford!!

Rafael Matsunaga slacks off with a slack combo. (Hyuk hyuk, get it?)

More next week! And don’t forget to follow my new project, 365CoolTricks.com on Twitter and Facebook…we’ll be launching soon with tons of cool tricks featuring kendama, juggling, spin top, awesome bar stunts, and more!
