World YoYo Contest Organizer Charged With Tax Evasion

March 31, 2013 By Steve Brown

Gregory Cohen

Gregory Cohen, the lead organizer for the World YoYo Contest since 2000, was arrested last week and immediately released on bond for failure to pay sales tax to the state of Florida. Authorities say that he failed to file six consecutive tax returns, which are due monthly in the state of Florida. According to our sources, all six of the tax returns in question were from 2010 and Cohen had been working with authorities for some time to remedy the situation when the warrant was issued. While some news sources are reporting specific dollar amounts owed, these dollar amounts are from a press release issued by the local prosecutors office and reflect the total amount if the maximum penalties are assigned, and are not indicative of the actual amount of back taxes owed. YoYoNews has been unable to confirm the actual amount of back taxes owed from 2010, but has confirmed that Cohen is one of at least a dozen local Leon County businesses who have suddenly been pulled off their back tax payment plans and arrested.

We immediately contacted Cohen for comment, and while he was unable to comment on the specific nature of the charges or his tax situation, YoYoNews was assured that “This is completely separate from the World YoYo Contest business and bookkeeping, and will not affect the 2013 World YoYo Contest or the transfer of the event to the IYYF.” Normal procedure for serious tax offenses is for business assets to be immediately seized and auctioned and the State of Florida has shown no interest in doing this. In light of this, YoYoNews has drawn the conclusion that while this arrest certainly indicates that Cohen is a lousy bookkeeper, it’s a simple matter of Cohen working with the State of Florida to rectify the situation and moving on. Hopefully with a better accounting system.

The IYYF was unavailable for a comment.

Gregory Cohen has been an influential, and sometimes controversial, member of the yoyo industry since the early 90s. His store, Infinite Illusions, was widely recognized as the first online yoyo retailer and for many years was easily the largest and most comprehensive. Cohen was an early pioneer of “boutique” yoyo and accessory manufacturing and retail; at a time when ordering spare wooden axles for a yoyo usually meant writing to the manufacturer and waiting weeks for your yoyo to be serviceable again, Cohen became a one-stop shop for string, axles, parts, and accessories. His mailorder business began slowing with stiff competition from companies like the now-defunct YoYoNation, and since YoYoExpert took the position of the world’s largest online yoyo retailer, Infinite Illusions has closed down almost completely.

Cohen took over the World YoYo Contest in 2000 from Dale Oliver, who had been running it in conjunction with IJA juggling festivals. Cohen expanded the event to a stand-alone event held in Orlando, Florida with almost triple the  attendance over the past decade; registered attendees have gone from 315 in 2000 to almost 900 in 2012. Cohen has come under fire in recent years for his inability to grow the contest beyond its current size, and recently agreed to turn over the World YoYo Contest to the IYYF, an independent managing body that would oversee the contest being outside of the United States for the first time since 1932.

The 2013 World YoYo Contest will be his last event as organizer.

Fixed Friday: Bro-Stall Repeaters

March 29, 2013 By Ed Haponik

Good ol’ Man & His Brother. I feel like for a lot of kids I’ve taught, that trick has really represented the leap necessary for calling themselves a “real yo-yoer”. Nailing that second string hit and hanging out in two separate formations might seem like baby steps to the initiated, but that first time you hit it, it’s an undeniably huge deal. Trying to recapture the sense of wonder I felt in my first days/months of yo-yoing is a big piece of my rationale for trying to come up with new tricks (albeit, with old yo-yo’s).

One way to renew the classic Man-Bro trick is to stall both sides out. One of the first and most essential stall patterns you learn in the progressive fixed axle style we’re pushing, it’s incredibly rewarding to bounce back and forth between trapeze and his brother. You can do it all day, and it’s the kind of trick that becomes positively automatic once you get it under fingers. That said, the back and forth symmetrical motion is also ripe for applying some significant challenges once you have the necessary tools.

In the initial example, you have the aforementioned “Trapeze-Stall to Bro-Stall” pattern. If you’re taking the time to watch this video, this is probably old hat to you. Keep watching – I bet something in the next few minutes won’t be.

One fun way to re-think the standard pattern is to put that Bro-Stall on the free hand, as in the 2nd trick. After stalling out and regenerating, just come around the bottom of your free hand thumb and land the stall in a chop mount. The regen out of that 2nd hold can be tricky if you have a loose wind, so really spread out that left thumb when you throw it back out. Another nice back and forth motion, though less bouncy than the original.

I think I’ve shown my trick Wimbledon on here as a string redirect, but whatever – here’s another simple variation. This time the Bro-Stall is happening in a throw-hand chopsticks mount, but it’s all the same animal. In fact, so is the trick after that, just with a little Lunar Landing thrown in the mix. I love doing Shoot the Moon right out of a Trapeze Stall. Always feels like it wants to come right at my face, and yet it never seems to nail me (watch, tomorrow it will).

Next up is not really a Man-Bro variation in the strict sense, but its symmetry makes it feel like it fits the theme. I don’t even remember what I originally called it, but Drew named it “Salvador Dali Windshield Wipers”, which remains the best-named trick in my repertoire.

Following that, whatever you can do in front of you, it stands to reason you can also do it behind the wrist, right? I’m not sure why, but I find this application inordinately HARD. I suppose off-plane stalls typically are.

Last but not least (I mean, unless you hate it) is a fun little GT stall repeater. Going back to those free hand chopsticks stall landings, this time cross over the string and stall out in a [tight] GT hold. Pretty tricky to hit that stall AND regen cleanly and repeat it, but it’s doable if you get the throw hand in there and help. If you want a solid regen, you’re probably going to need to shorten the hold up. GT’s can really waste string on a stall, and you need to try to compress it to have any juice left on the way out.

Best wishes to everyone in YoYoNewsLand, and Happy Friday! Stay fixed.

Donald Grant Kendama Video – Long Overdue

March 28, 2013 By Steve Brown

I’m really excited about this video, because I haven’t seen Donald Grant since at least 1996 or 1997 (coincidentally, about the same time I got into kendamas) and here he turns up with 8 minutes of remarkably creative and inventive kendama tricks.

For those who don’t know, Donald is one of the early pioneers of modern diabolo performance. For yoyo players I’ll break it down like this…remember how Alex Garcia changed yoyo freestyles? That’s what Donald Grant did for diabolo performances.

This video is edited down from about 90 minutes of footage, and while it moves a bit slow there is a TON of material in here…new concepts and trick execution for kendama are hard to come by but Donald gives us a lot to work on with this video.
